1980 Presidential Election: Four more years?
FIRST TURN WILL START AT DECEMBER 3, 1979
As the 1980 election nears, President Jimmy Carter and America is facing the toughest problems like the recent Iran Hostage Crisis, low economic growth, high inflation and interest rates, and intermittent energy crises. Although his handling of the hostage crisis as of this moment bounced his approval ratings up, he's still lagging in the poll for next year's election. Will he win another four years? or the White House would end up in the hands of the Republicans again?

Gallup Poll: November 15 - 17, 1979
APPROVE: 52%
DISAPPROVE: 40%
UNDECIDED: 8%

Poll taken from the same timeframe
Carter: 40%
Republican: 44%
Others: 2%
Undecided: 14%

You may sign up here. Explain your policies, as well as your campaign plans . President Carter will run for re-election, so you may choose him as your candidate (whoever gets first to choose him). Deadline for signing up will be Sunday, 11:59 PM EST. I will be posting the rules, as well as the schedule for the primaries. However, for fun, I will allow late entries.

NOTE: I've changed the rules.. Okay, so I can still allow late entries

REPUBLICAN:

Gerald Ford: Using his high profile, Ford runs on much the same platform of 1976. However, Ford is quick to point out how suddenly the economy boomed under him while the economy is doing iffy at best under Jimmy Carter. Running on honesty and a history of fixing the problem by working with the other side, Ford's inclusive message is easily able to bring in a wide coalition. If he can effectively hold it for the primary and bring it all to bear at the RNC, he would have a wide range of likely voters.

Rules for the "Announcement Turn" (first turn will be on Monday)
ANNOUNCEMENT TURN: April 9, 2016 to April 10, 2016
based on cxs018's rules

1. Announce your candidacy. It can be something as simple as a few sentences in an interview, or something as complex as a multiple-page announcement speech. All that matters is that you make it clear that you're running for president.
2. Post your campaign activities from any timeframe before December 3,1979.
3. Private message me to request endorsements. I'll approve them for the most part, unless they don't make sense. Maximum of five endorsements per turn Smiley. Endorsement requests will start at this turn

Primaries Rules
1. Post your campaign activities from the timeframe given.
2. Each candidate can choose one primary state to poll; I will privately message them the poll results. Note that national polls and polls for upcoming states will be posted on this thread for all to see.
3. Make your plans realistic. For example, you can't run a lot of ads at the same time if you don't fund raise. I will give high points for realism.
4. Private message me to request endorsements. I'll approve them for the most part, unless they don't make sense. Maximum of five endorsements per turn
5. I will create news stories using a random number generator as well as from real events; as usual, 1-5 = negative news for a candidate, 46-50 = positive news for a candidate, 6-45 = no impact.
6. Rules for the general election will be announced about halfway through the primaries, or whenever both nominees are obvious.

based on Lumine's rules
7.- Note on Delegates: For gameplay purposes, both parties will be using a proportional system for delegates, with a 15% threshold. The only exception to this rule is the decisive California Primary, which as in OTL will be Winner Takes All.

8. You may request for state primaries polls via PM. I will send the results via PM. Three states per turn. National primaries/upcoming state primaries/general election polls will be posted here.

9.NEW RULE: Please post the breakdown of your campaign spending and your raised amount every turn. This includes paraphernalia, ads, rallies, fundraisers, salary of your campaign workers, etc. It's up to you on how you will report it. It will also boost your campaign.

If you're candidate is a well known millionaire (e.g: Ross Perot, Donald Trump), you can spend with your own money as well. Label them as "own money. In order to raise your budget, just organize fund raising events.

Primary Polling and random events will start in the next turn. This turn will end in 48 hours.

Governor George Wallace as a Democrat. Running on a platform that he is a changed man, and has a load of experience. Basically saying hey, Carter's doing terrible, look what I did with Alabama. The Iranian Hostage Crisis would have never happened had I been president. Let's Make America Great Again.

President Carter Announces Re-Election Campaign!

Four Years Ago. I came to you, the American People, with an idea, a pledge, and a duty that I will bring back integrity, honesty, and trust to the highest office of any man in this great country. Today I am here to announce that I am running to continue that idea, that pledge, and my duty to the American People. (*cheers*)

I cannot lie and say that the past four years have been easy, they haven't been easy. When is any job easy? I cannot lie and say there have not been mistakes, no man can live a life without making one. But I cannot lie and say that we have not made progress, in the past four years we have seen over nine million new jobs be added to our economy, two and a half million of those are African-American and Latino-American. We have seen the world community join arms and work for peace against terroristic ideas. And we have seen a rapid decrease in the nuclear capability of the world.I would challenge any other man to say the same. These are not simple problems and these are not simple solutions, but that is the American way.

Terrorism, one of the blights on this world is the threat and the activities of terrorists. At one of the recent economic summit conferences between myself and the other leaders of the western world, we committed ourselves to take strong action against terrorism. Airplane hijacking was one of the elements of that commitment. There is no doubt that we have seen in recent years - in recent months - additional acts of violence against Jews in France and, of course, against those who live in Israel, by the PLO and other terrorist organizations. Ultimately, the most serious terrorist threat is if one of those radical nations, who believe in terrorism as a policy, should have atomic weapons. Both I and all my predecessors have had a deep commitment to controlling the proliferation of nuclear weapons. In countries like Libya or Iraq, we have even alienated some of our closest trade partners because we have insisted upon the control of the spread of nuclear weapons to those potentially terrorist countries. This ultimate terrorist threat is the most fearsome of all, and it's part of a pattern where our country must stand firm to control terrorism of all kinds.

I've been President now for almost four years. I've had to make thousands of decisions, and each one of those decisions has been a learning process. I've seen the strength of my nation, and I've seen the crises it approached in a tentative way. And I've had to deal with those crises as best I could. As I've studied the record between myself and other candidates, I've been impressed with the stark differences that exist between us. I think the result of this election and the polls indicate will that this fact is true. I consider myself in the mainstream of my party. I consider myself in the mainstream even of the bipartisan list of Presidents who served before me. The United States must be a nation strong; the United States must be a nation secure. We must have a society that's just and fair. And we must extend the benefits of our own commitment to peace, to create a peaceful world. I believe that since I've been in office, there have been six or eight areas of combat evolved in other parts of the world. In each case, I alone have had to determine the interests of my country and the degree of involvement of my country. I've done that with moderation, with care, with thoughtfulness; sometimes consulting experts. But, I've learned in this last three and a half years that when an issue is extremely difficult when the call is very close, the chances are the experts will be divided almost 50-50. And the final judgment about the future of the nation - war, peace, involvement, reticence, thoughtfulness, care, consideration, concern - has to be made by the man in the Oval Office. It's a lonely job, but with the involvement of the American people in the process, with an open Government, the job is a very gratifying one. The American people now are facing a lonely decision. Those listening to my voice will have to make a judgment about the future of this country. And I think they ought to remember that one vote can make a lot of difference. If one vote per precinct had changed in 1960, John Kennedy would never have been President of this nation. And if a few more people had gone to the polls and voted in 1968, Hubert Humphrey would have been President; Richard Nixon would not. There is a partnership involved in our nation. To stay strong, to stay at peace, to raise high the banner of human rights, to set an example for the rest of the world, to let our deep beliefs and commitments be felt by others in other nations, is my plan for the future. I ask you, the American people, to join me in this partnership.

Thank you, and God Bless The United States of America!

Governor George Wallace announces Presidential Campaign!

George Wallace announcing his presidential campaign in Mobile, Alabama.

"Hello my fellow Alabamans! I'd like to start off the following speech.... by asking Americans a simple question. Are you better off then you were four years ago? Is the economy in good shape? Are hard working Americans getting jobs? Can you go buy gas for your car at a cheap price? Can you say you're safer? Now, if you haven't been living under a rock for 4 years, you should know the answer to all of these questions is NO. It's actually simple to solve our problems, I can't really blame Carter that much, I mean ya know he was inexperienced, he had no business to be running for president. He won based on false, empty promises, and look where it has brought us. Now look here, I have experience y'all. I know how to do this thing, to campaign and to govern. I've been Governor of the Great state of Alabama. We've made the economy grow, got all these gangbangers and made Alabama great again. I believe the same vision is needed for America. Though this isn't my first time running, I've learned a lo from talking to the people, I've changed my view on a few things after witnessing the things I have.  But back to business, the American people deserve better than not being able to afford to drive their kids to school, not being able to sleep safe at night due to the threat of petty gangsters, nuclear war, terrorist attacks, you name it. And for those reasons, the reasons to make America thrive, to make America great again... I announce my intention to run for president of these United States! Please Support me in this great endeavor! Let's Make America Great Again! God Bless Y'all, and God Bless America!"

Former President Gerald Ford Announces Bid: "It is from your ranks I come, and on your side I stand!"

GERALD FORD: OF THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE

My fellow Americans, I am before you today as one of you. I had a normal life during my youth. As a young man, I was a football player and navy man. As a football player, I was best friends with one Willis Ward - a young black man. He experienced racism firsthand and publicly when Georgia Tech refused to play a game against us if he played. I was going to quit when the university agreed to not let him play until he personally asked me to play the game.

He went on to score all twelve of our points in the games besides that one. In many places, women and blacks have to work ten times as hard as any white man to get ahead. Jimmy Carter can't understand this. He's taken so many positions on the Equal Rights Amendment that no one can attack him for supporting or opposing it. Let me be clear: I support women, and I support the rights of every minority.

I've served twenty-four years as a Representative. Just sixteen years in, I became House Minority Leader. After eight years of that, I became Vice President for a year and then President for two and a half years. Jimmy Carter has eight years as Governor and many more as a peanut farmer besides. I don't think he would have had a chance if Nixon had not committed the un-American Watergate, spying on the Democrats.

I have the experience, knowledge, and background to be President again. You, the general public, are the people who know this. I am for the people, and I am of the people. You are the people who pay your taxes and obey the laws! It is from your ranks I come, and on your side I stand! In the big tent of myself and my supporters and my party, we have room for many people. However, nowhere in the big tent of Party of Lincoln is there room for bigotry of any kind!

I ask for your support as I run for President one more time, to be limited to one more term. I recognize that America is not whole and is not unified. However, I believe that we cannot win unless we do unite America. We may win an election against Jimmy Carter through division. We may win that battle. However, by dividing, we will not have won the war for America's heart and America's soul.

It's like John Kennedy said - 'Let every nation know, whether it wishes us good or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.' In the same vein, let every man, woman, and child know that I will not hesitate, that I will not falter, and that I will not fail - in my fight for the rights of every American, in my fight for America's heart, America's mind, and America's soul. God bless all of you, and God bless America!

Turn I: Start of the Campaign
December 3, 1979 - December 15, 1979

based on Lumine's rules and layout
LATE ENTRIES/SIGN UPS WILL BE STILL CONSIDERED
1.- Primary Ballot Deadlines: Candidates have until the next turn's end (December 29th) to file in for the Iowa Caucuses. Take notice of the deadlines and plan carefully! You may opt not to join the first primaries. Just indicate on your post whether you will run in a certain primary or not.

In the News!
from Wikipedia

Attack on US Embassy:
After false radio reports from the Ayatollah Khomeini that the Americans had occupied the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the United States Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan is attacked by a mob and set afire, killing 4 last November 21

Some hostages released:
Iranian leader Ruhollah Khomeini orders the release of 13 female and African American hostages being held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran last November 17

Primary Polling

Gallup: Republican Primary:

Gerald Ford: 64.6%
other Republicans: 12.0%
Undecided: 23.4%

As of this moment, Gerald Ford is the only one running in the Republican primaries. His experience as a former U.S President may give him an edge over other Republicans.

Gallup: Democratic Primary:

Jimmy Carter: 56.2%
George Wallace: 22.5%
Edwin Edwards: 5.2%
Undecided: 16.1%

The candidates as of this moment are all Southerners, which the press was taking note of. Incumbent President Jimmy Carter, who's trailing against a generic Republican candidate announced his re-election campaign. Facing with a relatively high approval rating for his current handling of the Iran Hostage Crisis gave him a boost at the polls. Meanwhile, George Wallace, governor of Alabama and a third-party candidate for president last 1968 also entered. Most of the voters seems concerned over Wallace's paralysis that he got in an assassination attempt last 1972, also campaigning for the Democratic nomination. Will he be able to downplay the concern of his critics and voters alike? Most of the political analysts noticed that in his speech, he made no mention of his paralysis, rather he focused on his experience compared to Carter's experience as a politician. Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards also announced his candidacy. Although his name was not that known in the political arena, he still gets a lot of support from his home state and also, from the surrounding southern states. He has still to make a breakthrough as of this point in order to become a viable contender for the Democratic nomination.

Random and Player Consequence Events will start at the next turn

This turn will start today and will end three days later: April 14, 11:59 PM EDT

BREAKING: Congressman Pete McCloskey To Run Against Ford in GOP Primary

San Jose-
Congressman Pete McCloskey, who ran an upstart anti-war campaign in 1972, is running again in the Republican primary, this time against former president Gerald Ford. McCloskey is considered a leader in the group of liberal Republicans in congress. He has been a strong opponent of foreign intervention and an influential supporter of environmental policy, promoting the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Some wonder whether or not the influence of progressive Republicans has waned to the extent that McCloskey's run will be fruitless. However, political scientist John Abrams *(fictional)*, disagrees with this conclusion. He told us, "Representative McCloskey has found a perfect vein of support among disaffected independents and centrist and left leaning Republicans. He will provide a tough challenge to former president Ford with his refreshing message and anti-establishment bent."

Upon reaching out to the McCloskey campaign, they provided us with this:
"The Republican Party must not give into the forces of radicalism. I'm afraid that this cycle, former President Ford has been pushed to the right, which will not serve us productively as a nation or a party. President Carter's administration has not been a success. We need to tackle stagflation and deal with our problems here at home. We need diplomacy to free Americans captured abroad. It's time for a change, not more of the same, which is why I'm running for president. I'm running for a more welcoming, successful, and powerful America."

He is filing for the Iowa caucuses, but is expected mainly to be more competitive on the coasts. This certainly livens up the race, and will be interesting going forward.

RONALD REAGAN ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY

Hello, what a wonderful crowd we have today! And I mean it! I am here today to announce my candidacy for the presidency of the United States of America! Now, we are in deep crisis, the Iranians have captured our hostages, and what is president Carter doing to stop it? Nothing! And look, Carter is facing a tough road for the nomination, lets see here... We have Mr. Segregation, and a Washington outsider! How will he face off against someone who he was? Now, we all know I nearly got the nomination in '76, I now hope to gain it in 1980! And hopefully the presidency! God bless California and god bless the United States of America!

Congressman John Anderson (R-Illinois) Announces Candidacy for President

"Friends, I come to you today with a heavy heart, and great fear for our country.  Jimmy Carter's policies have made America a nation in decline.  Inflation, unemployment, and interest rates are at the highest levels in decades, and our economy is in its worst shape since the Great Depression.  Our middle class is being crushed under the weight of stagflation.  Americans have to go further and wait longer to get the gas they need for their cars.  Our men in uniform are being held hostage by a tyrannical government in Iran, and our president sits idly by and watches it happen.  The Soviet Union still threatens us with a communist takeover, or worse, a nuclear war.  Worst of all, President Carter refuses to take a stand, for right or wrong, on the very real issues America faces today.  Ladies and gentlemen, Jimmy Carter must go!!!

Meanwhile, the Republican Party is moving further and further to the right, caving in to anti-government extremists who want to destroy the safety net and reinstate Jim Crow.  Their vision for America is to relegate blacks and women to second-class citizenship and leave our poorest and neediest without the help they desperately need.  They are racist, they are anarchist, and they are wrong.  Now mind you, not everyone in our party holds these views.  President Ford and Congressman McCloskey are both great, honorable men who represent the party of Lincoln with courage and dignity.  But as of late, our voices are being drowned out by the most dangerous elements of radicalism on the far right.  The Republican Party should be the party of freedom and equality for all Americans, not a cheap imitation of the Dixiecrats.

But in spite of my sorrow and fear for our party and our country, I still have hope.  I believe our party and our country can make a new beginning.  I believe we can turn the page from the last four years and face the 1980s with a rebirth of peace, prosperity, and freedom.  I believe that we can put the nightmares of Vietnam, Watergate and Jimmy Carter's malaise behind us until they are nothing but a bad memory.  I believe our country can remain the strongest, freest, and most prosperous nation in the history of the world.  And so today, I announce that I am a candidate for my party's nomination for President of the United States of America."

Ya know what, none of this crap in the Middle East would be happening if I was in the White House, and it won't. We're gonna get really talented negotiators, not political friends, to make peace around the world, and get to know it. Let's face it, the President has failed us. The world laughs at us, and that's not the type of reaction I wanna see when someone mentions the name of our great nation. I wanna hear admiration, and I wanna hear a friendly tone.

As many of y'all know, ol' Jimmy has been too eager to do that. I mean does he want America to fail? I sure as hell don't, if I did what he did in Alabama, hell I'd be hanged. America needs new leadership, an experienced guy who can fix our problems. Jimmy is simply a good guy, but the wrong man at the wrong time."
