Commoner for President 1980

Hello, people of Saint Louis! Hello, people of Missouri! I am here today because the two-party system has failed us! We have a Democratic president who can't handle foreign affairs and an extremist Republican party trying to bring our country back to the 19th century! America, we will not stand for this. That is why I am running for president as a member of the Citizens Party!

Pete McCoskey Schedule

Before December 3
-Fundraising among personal connections
-Speaking on college campuses around DC about opportunity
-Still showing up to work to vote on legislation
-Fundraisers in district
-File for Iowa Caucus and Puerto Rico primary

December 3
-Inaugurating campaign storefront/state HQ: Iowa City, IA
-Speaking to college students about economic opportunity: Iowa City, IA
-Rally and fundraiser: Des Moines, IA
-Touring small businesses/presser: Des Moines, IA

It's time to restore the promise and the hope of the American dream for our students. I support ensuring that college costs don't rise excessively and that graduating students have an opportunity for employment.

December 4
-Rally about stagflation: Cedar Rapids, IA
-Meeting farmers: Just outside of Cedar Rapids, IA
-Fundraising dinner: Dubuque, IA
-Knocking doors: Dubuque, IA

-Meeting voters: Riverdale, IA

-Knocking doors: Davenport, IA

December 7
-Meeting voters: Muscatine, IA
-Knocking doors: Burlington, IA
-Rally about gas prices: Mt Pleasant, IA
-Meeting Mahirisi community leaders: Fairfield, IA

While we certainly don't agree on all the political issues, I greatly appreciate the kindness of the Mahirisi community and share their general concern for our potential future under Reagan or Wallace.

December 8
-Meeting voters: Ottumwa, IA
-Touring small businesses: Knoxville, IA
-Meeting voters downtown: Des Moines, IA
-Speaking to a community center meeting: Des Moines, IA

December 9

President Carter is a good man at heart. He has America's best interests in mind, but I do believe that his policies in office have not been successful in dealing with crises. As oil prices skyrocket and our economy grinds to a halt, I would like to see more action on behalf of the American people. We need to ensure energy stability while preserving our environment. I believe that to jump start the economy we need to simplify the tax code and regulatory burdens on small businesses.

December 14
-GOTV: Des Moines, IA
-GOTV: Council Bluffs, IA
-Meeting farmers: Ute, IA
-GOTV: Sioux City, IA

The Republican Party is being dragged to the right, towards the kind of extremism that prioritizes ideological think tanks over the good people of Iowa.

December 15
-Flight to Manchester, NH
-Rally: Concord, NH
-Fundraiser: Concord, NH

"The reason I'm meeting with students like you today is because I want to leave you a stronger country than what my parents' generation left us.  Under Jimmy Carter, interest rates have gone through the roof, making it harder for you to pay off your student loan debts.  You can't buy food or gas because inflation is too high.  And the jobs you take to work your way through school give menial pay because your employers can't afford to give you any more.  And if Jimmy Carter wins another term in the White House, it will only get worse.  I want to make our economy grow again.  I want the 1980s to be one of the greatest periods of prosperity in our nation's history.  I want you to have all the opportunities that my generation had, and then some.  That's why I'm here today, and that's why I'm asking for your vote."

REAGAN ENDORSEMENTS

William F. Buckley

Reagan is a definition of a true conservative! He is not an extremist nor is he a centrist. I hope that you will support Reagan through and through in the primaries, and later on the general.
Reagan will appear on Buckley's show Firing Line Sometime in turn 2

Alexander Haig

Ronald Reagan's foreign policy makes the most sense. Since I was a former NATO commander, I am pretty knowledgeable on foreign policy, and Reagan's is one of the best out there
Haig will be reaching out to veterans and American troops stationed in Europe

James S. Thurmond

Ronald Reagan is what a true conservative looks like, and I am confident that he will make America in a better state than it already is1  Which is why I am supporting Ronald Reagan for the presidency
Thurmond will be reaching out to South Carolinian voters

1.(I was going to say "make America great again" but then I realized that Wallace has that slogan.

Pete McCloskey Endorsements

New York Senator Jacob Javits

I'm confident that representative McCloskey will make a great president. Having worked with him in congress on a number of issues, I know that his passion, intellect, and ability are all off the charts. Pete is the leader we need in these trying times.
Senator Javits will chair the northeast-US regional campaign and will appear at events with Pete

CT-4 Rep. Stewart McKinney

Southern Connecticut has been hit hard by the oil crisis, inflation, and a host of other issues emblematic of a leadership failure in DC. In talking to my constituents, it's clear they want a Republican president, but not an extremist like Ronald Reagan. They want a moderate with experience fighting for what's right-and Rep. Pete McCloskey fits the bill perfectly. I'm backing Pete because I believe that his plans to expand educational access and fight poverty are important to our nation's future.
Rep. McKinney will spend some time campaigning in New Hampshire these two weeks

Former Kentucky Senator John Sherman Cooper

Over the years, I have been blessed to serve the American people in a variety of roles, from the domestic realm as a senator to being the ambassador to West Germany. Representative Pete McCloskey will guide us from a stagnant economy, expand equality to women, and improve America's foreign standing.
Fmr. Senator John Sherman Cooper will co-chair the national campaign and over these two weeks will campaign in Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, and New Hampshire.

Pete McCloskey Radio Ad
-Playing in Des Moines, the Quad Cities area, and Iowa City
-Also playing in Manchester, Nashua, Hanover, and Concord NH

American families are struggling, but ideologues are concerned more with grabbing power than they are with solving problems. If you want a problem solver in the White House who will work with congress to start tackling the problems that face us on day 1, vote Republican representative Pete McCloskey for president.

Fundraising
-1.5 million raised
-750,000 spent

John Anderson Campaign Endorsements

Senator Chuck Percy (R-Illinois)

"Having served with Congressman Anderson in the Illinois Congressional delegation, I know that he is fully prepared to be president from day one.  I know he's a problem solver who can handle the difficult issues of our time.  He is the perfect candidate to defeat Jimmy Carter and take our country back from the brink of collapse."

Senator Percy will serve as national campaign chairman and will campaign for Anderson in the Midwest.

Senator Charles Mathias (R-Maryland)

"John Anderson is exactly the kind of leader we need in the White House.  He can unite all Americans to bring peace and prosperity for many years to come."

Senator Mathias will serve as Maryland campaign chairman and campaign for Anderson in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

George Wallace Campaign Endorsements

Senator Scoop Jackson (D-Washington)

"Ya know what, it's a shame when your own party's president is a failure, and apologizes for America. George Wallace is the only candidate that I feel knows the issues today. He has turned the failure off the American Dream into the Alabama Miracle. Let's make the American Dream, American Reality. Keep us safe. I'm all in for George!"

Senator Jackson will regularly appear with Governor Wallace, and will serve as Campaign Chairman for Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.

Senator Frank Church (D-Idaho)

"George Wallace is the man for the job. Jimmy had a chance, but he blew it! He's diminished the US's reputation around the world. But the economy is in shambles, and giving continued failed leadership isn't gonna win in November. I'll work for George as hard as I can for him to be the next President of the United States!"

Senator Church will regularly appear at events with Wallace in Western States, and will serve as Campaign Chairman in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

Governor Jerry Brown (D-California)

"Around twelve years ago, I would have never imagined myself endorsing George Wallace. He's a changed man now, he doesn't hold hate in his heart... He never really did, but he's the right man for the job. He is experienced, he cares about the people. He will make sure that America isn't laughed at, he will bring back jobs, turn around the economy for the better, and protect the American family. I'm all in for George!!!"

Brown will attend events with Wallace rarely, but still. He will serve as Campaign Chairman in California and Nevada, since he is occupied with Gubernatorial duties.

Edwin Edwards Speech

G'day, fellow Louisianans, I have served diligently as your governor, as a supporter of the Louisianan people, the farmer and laborer, regardless of the color of their skin or their gender.

Now, why am I running for president, the reason is to get the democratic back to it's roots, of New Deal populism, just as FDR would have liked it to be, just as Huey Long would have liked it to be. Our platform, is a platform for the people, reducing taxes for the working and middle class, expanding social services, helping our farmers, with agriculture subsidies, expanding welfare, funding our schools, increasing teacher pay, and expanding welfare for those that need it the most.

We need to build more roads, more highways, we need to have our laborers, our builders back working, and curbing the rising un-employemnt and inflation rate. We need to have ambitious leadership, one which tells us we need full employment for our citizens, one which commits us to free universal healthcare, one which commits us to improving urban and rural transport, through trains and buses.

We need to focus on concerns of all Americans, downtrodden, working or middle class. People from the cities in New York and Chicago, to rural Americans right here in Louisiana. We need to identify their concerns, living pay-check to pay-check, struggling to feed their families. We need to address these concerns, and have a radical plan, a radical plan, to eliminate poverty, to eliminate crime and to eliminate unemployment. Just as we did at the new deal, we need to expand opportunists for our fellow Americans, with college funding, expanded help for the poor, investments in science, schools and infrastructure, and empowered opportunities for blacks and whites alike.

We need to make sure, the people are served first, not big business and enterprise alike. We need to regulate big business, to make sure they do not run amok and hurt our fellow Americans, our hard working-class friends and colleagues. Our president has not been able to do that, while a great gal, President Carter is, he has not been able to lead our country in times of unemployment and inflation, he has failed in this task. Throughout my leadership in Louisiana we have enacted great measures to expand social services, education and reform government, reduce bureaucracy, so that the people are well-served by their government.

Now in these times of hardship on the american government, we do not need a president who seems out of touch with the concerns of middle America, by telling them to buy less, when many of them do not have work or stable employment due to failed leadership of the Carter administration. We also definitely do not need Wallace, for god knows what he stands for these days. Now the last things, we need is the god dam*n republicans, the party so profoundly pro big business and anti-worker. You, the american people need, you the american people deserve leadership, just like FDR and Long, for a new deal to the american people, to achieve the american dream for all Americans.
