Fmr. President Gerald Ford's wife is now suffering an organ shutdown. Her liver was being replaced, as it had been found to be ruined by her alcoholism and addiction to pills. Her body has rejected the new liver, and therefore the Former President is withdrawing from the race. Within six months she will either have recovered or died, but the Former President will not continue to run for President during this time of grief. He therefore suspends his campaign.

Reagan campaign about Mrs. Ford's death

Betty Ford was a remarkable woman and it was sad to see her go so soon. The Reagan family offers their condolences to the Ford Family.

Vote McCloskey to bring the economy to the people. Sick of extremism in the GOP? Vote McCloskey to win the general election.

TV Advertisement
Will air in Des Moines, IA and the Quad Cities area

As our country faces economic struggles and bureaucracy balloons, we need fresh leadership in Washington to solve problems. Pete McCloskey is the problem solver Iowans need. He's electable, experienced, and pragmatic. In congress, Pete has forged compromises while also sticking true to his beliefs, standing up for working families and small businesses throughout his career. Don't nominate an extremist like Ronald Reagan. Vote for common sense. Vote McCloskey.

Previous Endorsers
Sen. Jacob Javits: Campaigning in New England alongside Pete, fundraising in New York
Stewart McKinney: Helping draft policy details, organizing voter registration efforts in NH and MA
John Sherman Cooper: Campaigning in Iowa with Pete, working on the platform, organizing events

Presser

Reporter: What sets you apart from Rep. Anderson?
Pete: I believe I have unique experience. I certainly have a lot of respect for my colleague, Rep. Anderson, but I think my work on the Endangered Species Act and against the war demonstrates that my record is unique and the best for Americans of all stripes.

Reporter: You openly opposed former president Nixon. Are you loyal to the GOP?
Pete: I'm loyal to my country, first and foremost, which is why I will always run against corruption, back room deals, and illegal behavior. Government is supposed to represent the people, act in their interest, and remain honest and open. I want to make government leaner and more effective.

It's a possibility. I don't have time for this game right now, but I could easily be Ford for someone's running-mate in a month or so.

Turn III
December 30, 1979- January 5, 1980

1.- Primary Ballot Deadlines: Candidates have until this turn's end to file in for the Puerto Rico and New Hampshire primaries. Take notice of the deadlines and plan carefully! You may opt not to join the first primaries. Just indicate on your post whether you will run in a certain primary or not. Filing for the Iowa Caucuses are over.
2.- Primary Debates (Republican Party)Sad A Republican Party primary debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters will be held this turn. I will post the questions later. Just indicate on your post whether you will join the debate or not. However, I will post questions for all candidates. Take note that this debate, whether joining or not will be a critical factor in the polling next turn.
In the News!
from Wikipedia
(might as well consider this as random events)

US Enters Recession:
The United States enters a minor recession spawned by the 1979 oil crisis; The Unemployment Rate rises to 6.3%

Pres. Carter proclaims grain embargo against USSR
U.S. President Jimmy Carter proclaims a grain embargo against the USSR with the support of the European Commission.

Gallup: Republican Primary:

Ronald Reagan: 52% (+15%)
John Anderson: 18% (+7%)
Pete McCloskey: 14% (+7%)
Undecided: 16% (+5%)

After Former Pres. Ford's surprise withdrawal due to his wife's condition, Gov. Reagan is seen as the one who benefited the most in the polls. However, Rep. Anderson and Rep. McCloskey are also seen as dark horses who can sway the moderates before the primaries start. Their poll numbers next turn will depend mostly on the debate.

Gallup: Democratic Primary:

Jimmy Carter: 50% (hold)
George Wallace: 30% (+2%)
Cliff Finch: 5%(+5%)
Undecided: 15% (+1%)

Finch mostly inherited Gov. Edwards' supporters. While Pres. Carter's numbers remain stable at 50%. Gov. Wallace's intense campaigning also made his numbers rise. However, Gov. Finch's numbers are still considered as "initial" since that he just recently entered the race.

Random and Player Consequence Events
RULE: If the number generated was from (6 - 45), I will not post it anymore.

Carter wins debate.

According to 13 political analysts, eight believed that Carter won the debate, while 4 believed that Gov. Wallace won. One analyst scored it as a draw, citing that Gov. Wallace's new positions appealed to voters. Also in the debate, the two also regretted their perceived "negative/controversial stance and campaigning" during their past elections. Gov. Wallace also reiterated that he's fit to serve as president.

This turn will start today and will end a week later (due to the debate):May 2, 11:59 PM EDT

Undecided: 25%

-Fundraiser in Alexandria, Virginia
-Fundraiser in Falls Church, Virginia
-Televised campaign speech from Washington, DC

"As we count down the last seconds of 1979, we will not only be welcoming a new year, but also a new decade.  As president, I want to make the 1980s the most peaceful and most prosperous decade since World War II.  But if we give Jimmy Carter another four years in the White House, the 1980s will be another decade of stagflation, unemployment, record-high interest rates, and appeasement to our enemies.  In 1980, you, the voters, will have the final say on what this new decade will bring.  Choose wisely."

December 31
-New Year’s Eve party with Congressional staff in Washington, DC

January 1
-Fundraiser in Omaha, Nebraska
-Fundraiser in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

-Town hall in Moultonborough, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Sandwich, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Tamworth, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Ossipee, New Hampshire

"I can't tell the difference between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter sometimes.  When Reagan was governor of California, he signed the largest tax increase by any state in American history.  He opposed desegregation in the South and now opposes the Equal Rights Amendment.  And most of all, he was a registered Democrat until four years before he was elected governor.  As far as I'm concerned, he might as well have stayed a Democrat."

January 5
-Town hall in Milton, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Rochester, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Somersworth, New Hampshire
-Town hall in Rollinsford, New Hampshire
