For me, it has to be Bush 43, he got us into a war there was no point in fighting, the economy almost completely collapsed during his presidency thanks in part mostly to his policies which ultimately were disasters (Medicare Part D, No Child Left Behind, etc.

My second would have to be Hoover.

Probably Wilson. He did cause WWII, but, you know, minor details, minor details.

This seems to fit you better. I understand why GWB won't be many people's favorite President, but he's not even close to, objectively, being the worst President.

James Buchanan was a disgrace.
John Tyler was a disgrace.
Millard Fillmore was an inept disgrace.
Ulysses Grant was a failure and was corrupt.
Richard Nixon is self-explanatory.
Woodrow Wilson is also self-explanatory.

All better candidates for worst President then GWB.

Tyler was one of our, if not our best president. He was more Jeffersonian than Jefferson himself.

He gave us Texas and was not as bad as many people make him out to be.

I would say for worst are Carter-Present.

Carter himself was a good guy, just at the wrong time.

Buchanan tore up the union, Johnson/Nixon combined destroyed the office of the Presidency.

Take your pick.

Was there really anything Buchanan could have done to save the Union though?

SO I should be a Democrat because I can't stand Bush? Lol, ok, I hate Obama as equally as I do Bush for the same mistakes that Bush made, if Bush never wrongly attacked Iraq we wouldn't be having an ISIS problem now would we?

Obvious Dubya vote. Pierce gets up on my list, though.

George W Bush is the worst.

Of course the Democrat with a long resume who served as Secretary of State and Senator from a large state was pretty bad, too...

People bashing Ulysses S Grant => gedoutahere

Of course it's very hard to ask this question, because "worst" can mean all sorts of things. The classic answer of Buchanan is a fair choice, but Andrew Johnson, Pierce and, yes, Dubya are worthy choices. Of important Presidents, probably Wilson, Polk, and Jackson are the worst.

1. Franklin Pierce (1853-1857)
Contrary to what seems to be the consensus here, I would argue that the president most responsible for the outbreak of the Civil War was not Buchanan, but Pierce. It was during Pierce's Administration that the fatal doctrine of popular sovereignty ("Expand slavery with a Smile!TM") was enacted, and his handling of Bloody Kansas (not to mention his tacit support for pro-slavery fillibusters in Central America) was simply despicable.

2. James Buchanan (1857-1861)
Even if you completely absolve Buchanan of any blame for the events of his Administration, that still doesn't excuse the gross incompetence with which he handled them.

3. Warren G. Harding (1921-1923)
Why has no-one mentioned Harding? Between the post-war crash and Teapot Dome, he's definitely in the running for "biggest disappointment."
