I learned at a party some people I know do this with her daughter.

But I don't see the problem. They'll still get a kick out of some of the slapstick jokes and the talking dog and talking baby, and all the adult humor and references will go right over their head.

Yes, except for that stupid episode about Brian being an atheist.

(A very stupid episode since Brian has actually met Jesus Christ and seen Him perform miracles.)

"It's not OK to watch Family Guy at any age"

That show sucks. Watching it at 5 isn't worse than watching it at 15 or 25 though.

Sure, why not?

Then again, my parents had me watch Mr. Brooks when I was 7.

Definitely not, the only ages it's appropriate is in your tween years, after that you should mature and never watch it.

Would you watch it with a fox? Would you, could you, in a box?

It's not going to scar a 5 year old.  I don't care.

I do remember showing this scene and at the beginning she asked "What is he doing?" We all just laughed and didn't explain it.

I actually agree with BRTD that most of the humor goes over the childs head, though I also think I'd at least discriminate based on the episodes. The earlier episodes might be alright, I suppose.

I definitely would not let an 9 year old watch it. A bunch of my second cousins and I once angered my mother's cousin because we were watching King of the Hill and our two youngest cousins (aged 7 and 5 at the time I think) were in the room.

Your mother's cousin is way over sheltering her kids if she thinks KotH is going to harm any person, ever.

King of the Hill is family entertainment!

No, 5 is way too young to watch Family Guy. Better than letting a 5-year old watch South Park though. /prude

Family Guy has too many non-sequitor cultural allusions to be very funny except in a slapstick sort of way, even among Americans who speak English as their native language.  It's also incredibly violent.  The violence is rather like a crutch for them, as they depend upon shock value and blood in order to fill in the less interesting gaps.  I had become very desensitized to it after watching for so many years, and one day my wife comes in and exclaims "I can't believe you're letting him watch that!" as my son and I were enjoying the episode in which Stewie is beating Brian senseless over an unrepaid loan.  I paused and stared at it and thought, wow, there's a little baby with a broken bottle cutting a dog with it, and I've convinced myself that this is funny.

Anyway, I voted for the third option.

To be honest, my five year old had seen parts of episodes, but I am uncomfortable with her watching it in general.

I mean, it's somewhat surprising. American Dad is one of the better animated sitcoms around these days, but MacFarlane's other works are much, much worse.

Eh, I don't think she thinks it will harm them. I just don't think she likes her kids watching Adult Swim due to the ads that run in between shows, etc.
