Safe seat MP resigns, he runs in the by-election.

I know that. I guess one of the Ontarians will do it. Layton didn't have a seat for over a year, but that was later in the cycle & before the NDP went off life support.

I see no reason why Jagmeet needs to get into Parliament before the 2019 election (when he would almost certainly run in his home riding of Brampton East). He could ask Mulcair to stick around and lead the party in the House for the next two years while he spends the time crisscrossing the country drumming up support. Trudeau had a seat in Parliament the whole time he was leader of the third place Liberals - but he was so seldom in the House that he may as well not have had a seat at all.

IF (a big IF) Jagmeet Singh did want to get into parliament sooner it would have to be relatively safe seat with an MP who is older and who may want an exit strategy anyways and ideally it would be in Ontario. There are two ridings that come to mind - Hamilton Centre where Christopherson is getting old and Windsor West where Brian Masse has been MP for 17 years now (though he not that old) but Windsor has the added bonus of being Jagmeet's hometown

Belanger on Singh & QC. Also says it could be an Angus-Singh race.

I think Singh might win on the first ballot.

Christopherson is only 62. Hardly old.

Agreed it will be between Singh and Angus, with Ashton in third.

Has as improved at all after her disastrous 2012 performance, or is it just a desire to have a left-wing leader following someone closer to the center?

She is the candidate of the left, and so will get the support of the more left wing members (beyond the tiny socialist caucus). She is definitely the candidate of SJW tumblerism, I think her handling of "culturally misappropriating" Beyonce is proof of that. Tongue

Plus she will get a certain amount of support just by virtue of being the only woman in the race

Angus posted something interesting on his FB:

"The Ottawa/Toronto media have declared the NDP race to be about becoming more stylish. C'mon folks time to pick up your game. The great unwashed can definitely do better. I'm the worst offender having been called over the last few days frumpy, dowdy, old and chippy. I promise that next time I stop at a roadside for a photo I will wear a jaunty accessory, like maybe my Roughriders ball cap."

I have found it to be borderline offensive.  It attacks the media outlets rather than Singh himself, but the line about the "jaunty accessory" was a low blow.  The word "jaunty" to me applies to someone who exudes confidence, and saying that toward a turban wearing visible minority member, comes off as cowardly.

Ignoring the possible dogwhistling, Angus may be trying to channel Bernie Sanders' substance of style approach.

If I was Singh I'd be livid. And if Angus does win the leadership, this could be used against him by the Liberals.

The proposal to ban religious symbol for people in position of authority (like judge, police) don't apply to elected offcials. Since elected officials represent all people, it could apply to them also.

Interesting to know even some MPs don't like a leader wearing religious symbols.

Anecdotal evidence: heard a senior citizen seeing an image of Singh had a reaction in saying this will not pass in Quebec. He is totally unknown so based only on looks.

Very funny.  But it looks like the Layton coalition is very much behind Singh.

I'm not thrilled about Jagmeet, but that's how I see it.

Watched some of the Sudbury debate today. I'm very impressed with Singh's French.  I take back what I said previously.  He is stronger than Angus with his French, IMO.

I thought that debate was dreadful.  No applause until the end made it really flat and monotone.  These "lighter side" questions (do they have to do this in EVERY debate?) are a waste of time.  And most of the questions were designed to get a banal agreement:  Will you stand up to Trump? What do you think of the new Conservative leader Andrew Scheer? Do you support a relationship with unions?

This is about the renewal of the party and making people excited about the NDP again.  And people want to be able to decipher differences in terms of policy and vision, that's the whole point of having debates!

NDP debates are always cordial affairs. I was actually surprised when there was some 'debate' coming from the outsider, Pat Stogran.

Well that should change.  But for some reason they think it's a "choice" between this format and Jerry Springer.

Niki Ashton is pregnant; due in November. She'll definitely be 'showing' come vote time. I've never heard of a candidate being pregnant in this kind of a high profile election. This will probably help her, right?

More from Charlie Angus' Facebook.  What is problematic is that he isn't speaking up against what is being said by his supporters.  Difficult stuff to read.

I imagine it might be seen as possibly distracting to her duties should she become leader, not spending time rebuilding the NDP. Nobody will say that openly though, I'm sure. She's not going to be in the top 2 anyway.

That comment on Charlie Angus' page makes me think back to David Ahenakew--the whole loaded "aboriginal racism" thing...
