Assuming Clinton is the nominee...

Very liberal, fairly young (for a Democratic politician, at least Tongue ), and the fact that he's a white man could be a positive for Clinton (though it also could be a negative; really depends, IMO).

Thoughts?

Mods should delete threads like this. Every generic Democrat member of Congress does not need their own thread discussing the pros and cons of them being a VP nominee. One "Who should be Clinton's VP?" thread is good enough.

I would approve of Merkley.

Yeah, I've been suggesting Merkley as a potential VP for a while.

Of everyone from the Pacific region, he seems like one of the best picks for Clinton (though I'd prefer Becerra and possibly Schatz). I can't really think of anything he's done, though.

Wouldn't Wyden be a more powerful speaker? IMO, Wyden is the best Democrat in Washington or Oregon. He's a lot like Franken in his pros, though not as charismatic, but he also has the upside of never being a comedian. In other words, a more libertarian Al Franken with less pros and cons.

Merkley seems a bit less libertarian-sequel than Wyden. Can anyone confirm this?

Wyden is older than Merkley and he supports the TPP.

I'm still fairly certain it'll either be Kaine or Warner.

Warner barely got reelected last time despite everyone thinking he's safe. Not a very good recommendation for a VP candidate. Kaine is more likely.

It will be Perez or Castro. Kaine and Warner voted for Fast Track. Clinton needs CO & NV and Pa and NH more than Va

At this point he would make a good choice if Clinton really, really feels that she needs to make it up with the Sanders wing. But I really doubt it.

I suggest a megathread.

A VP from the Pacific NW!? People care about us!? Cheesy

Anyway, I'd personally really like Merkley, though I'm not sure the mere fact that he's supporting Sanders would bring the Sanders coalition to Clinton (if she were having real problems with that.)

I'd be all for a VP from my home state. Merkley or Wyden. Blumenauer would be the best, but I'm a little crazy. Tongue

Wyden has a bit of an independent streak (e.g. he pursued his own healthcare reform bill in 2009) that I think would make many presidential candidates wary of him adding him to the ticket. I also think Wyden would probably prefer the independence of being elected in his own right (though I don't pretend to be an expert on Wyden's internal thinking), and probably wouldn't want to give up his ranking position on the Finance Committee.

I don't get why everyone wants to take good senators out of the senate so they can fill a useless office that doesn't do anything.

Every motive is an ulterior motive for endorsing a misogynist fascist who dares to challenge Hillary Clinton.

Once Sanders looses, Hillary will rally the Bernie folks behind her by picking the only senator who endorsed her opponent?

Or Merkley wants to be the Sanders of 2020/2024. Someone new is going to have to carry the mantle due to his age, and there are no other obvious choices.
