71 years old, can't blame him for wanting to retire.

He'll have only been in Congress 16 years. I thought he had been there for a lot longer, for some reason.

He has rather rich history before coming to Congress: state Senator, candidate for FL Secretary of state (1978), lost primary for US Senate (1980) and Governor (1994), and so on...

Yet another seat that is likely to be replaced with a right wing nut.

20 of the 27 are running again right now, though a few have switched districts.

Still, that's a big chunk of them. Over 1/4, I think. Turnover will be interesting, especially if state legislators run and there's turnover in the legislative seats as well.

That's...really really depressing. I worked with Congressman Crenshaw a few summers ago and I'll be working in his DC office this summer as well. He's been head of the "obscure caucus" for years and has been one of the most important guiding hands in the Appropriations Committee for almost a decade. He's a pretty great congressman for us and I'm sad to see him go.

On another note, Jacksonville politics are going to be INSANE over the next few months. People have been waiting for Ander to retire for years and this is their one big chance to advance.

Yeah I was thinking he was a congressman during at least some of that.

Heh. Surprised I didn't hear about it around the office last week. I usually get a lot of good rumors/gossip.

Does Former Mayor John Peyton or Mayor Lenny Curry live in the district?

Peyton is too lazy and ended too unpopular to run. Curry probably does live in the district, but I doubt he wants it. He was already a big enough name as state GOP chair before becoming mayor; if he'd wanted a congressional seat he probably would have already picked and won one.

Former Sheriff John Rutherford has declared, he ended his term in office popular and has always been a political animal; I'd easily put him up as the front-runner. Former mayor Delaney and State Senator Aaron Bean have also been mentioned as potential candidates. I also wouldn't count out the Tebow talk quite yet. It's pretty dumb, but he'd have a lot of support in the district and could give any other candidate a serious run for their money if he DID decide to run. From what I've heard, he hasn't been willing to deny it yet, so keep him in the back of your mind.

I don't know who the democrats could possibly run, but it'd be pointless and they don't even have any half-decent candidates. The most prominent Democrat in Duval is former mayor Brown and I'm preeeety sure he lives in Corrine Brown's district.
