The more i think about it Newt is the prefect pick for Trump.  He's basically like Trumps Dick Cheney.  Washington insider with experience at fighting the Clinton's.  Also he was runner up in 2012 gop primary somewhat so the voters already know who he is.

Yes, because America wants to be run by two old white men, whose treatment of women is less than desirable.

Trump is demanding that his VP hopefuls hand over their tax records...Which is weird since he claims you can't learn anything from them....

Gingrich, whatever he may be, is a "movement conservative".  He's the closest thing to Reagan and Goldwater out there, and he brings a sort of nostalgic appeal for a swath of voters that are partisan, but not totally sold on Trump.

Good God, the irony.

TrumpMiller is neither intelligent enough, nor self-aware enough to get the irony.

It's safe to say by this point that Hillary cannot afford to pick a centrist/center-left running-mate like Tim Kaine, not if she is to have any hope of reconciling with Sanders' supporters (not to mention Bernie himself) and get them energized for November.  There's a host of other, more substantive changes that would need to be made to the Democratic Party, but picking a running-mate that could gin up enthusiasm for Hillary would be an excellent start.

Trump has hired A.B. Culvahouse to lead/participate in the VP vetting process:

He ran the vetting process for Republican presidential nominee John McCain in 2008 that ultimately selected Sarah Palin.

Trump should drop him like a hot rock.

This news it about two weeks old, but I just saw it now, and looks like it hasn't been posted.  Huckabee responds to the VP question:

I may have ended up writing in Bill Weld in the 2006 NY Governor's race.

In any event, this is a choice that appears well-designed to appeal to, uh, me, and probably nobody else in the country.

It's funny that the Libertarian ticket (two former Governors) will be more experienced than the GOP ticket.

And way ahead of the laughable credentials of the Green Party.

This makes sense, but I really don't think the most staunch Sanders supporters will vote Clinton unless she chooses Sanders.  Warren and the like will probably not generate enough support amongst those progressives.

When can we expect announcements regarding the VP picks? I recall Romney announcing Ryan a couple of weeks prior to the convention, whereas Biden and Palin were picked just days prior to their respective conventions.

I believe Trump said his announcement would be during the RNC. He thinks it makes the event more exciting than doing it beforehand. I suspect Clinton will wait until after the RNC, possibly the day it concludes in order to step on any RNC bounce.

Ideally I would like to see someone like Jim Webb or Ron Unz who are political mavericks but I think he will have to go with someone who is a Republican unlike Webb or who has served in Washington. Scott Brown is a safe choice, he's non-offensive to mainline conservatives but does not scare of independents the way that Newt Gingrich or Sarah Palin would.
