Yeah, the Massachusetts State Legislature (with a veto proof majority) could just pass a law like other states have where the appointment has to be from the same party as the previous office holder.

Unless Trump is doing this purely as a gesture towards Christie, this implies that the VP search is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
