Presumably at some point on Thursday, Trump will tell the person he's picking that they've got the job, and he'll tell the short listers who didn't make it that it isn't them.  Whether it leaks immediately after that or if we have to wait until Friday, I don't know.  I remember in 2008, the night before Palin was announced, we started getting leaks about who McCain had called to let them know they didn't get the job, until eventually it was down to just Palin and Ridge, or something like that.

Logically, you would think so. But this is Trump; and while he lacks a lot of professional and human qualities to be POTUS, the one quality he doesn't lack is a sense of dramatics and media savvy. Unless he wants it intentionally leaked, this will be a media frenzy until the very end.

Mind you, if it's really between Pence, Gingrich and Christie, it's pretty clear to me that it will be Pence. However, I wouldn't put it past Trump to intentionally mislead and then surprise with a choice that is currently not being mentioned (Fallin, Rubio, Kasich, even Rice). But the current odds are still that it will be Tump-Pence.

Apparently Gingrich talked smack about Trump during a closed door event with the Republican State Leadership Committee back in February, and the audio has been leaked:

Per FULL convention speaker list released this morning, both Christie and Gingrich are scheduled to speak-- no Pence. Seems clearest sign yet he's pick.

On the other hand, according to Politco Pro, Pence's campaign for Governor just started buying up August airtime...

So, does that mean Christie or Sessions still have a chance?

Can't Dispense the Pence?

Don't want to switch to Gingrich?

Eyes all misty for Christie?

Maybe a call-in to Fallin?

Wouldn't it be nice to have Rice?

Or have Ivanka or Jared hired?

Trump is so tired...much easier when people were just fired!

She could pick him if 1) she really wants to lose, or 2) Bill is in control of the VP search process, and he wants her to lose.

I will wait to see if other news orgs go with this before considering it "official".

My guess - just a smokescreen for Kaine.

Clinton probably wanted to signal to Warren, as early as possible, that she will not be picked, to avoid disappointment later.  Vilsack is just a placeholder, to formally have two picks!

Boring. Gingrich or Christie would have been good for laughs at least.

Whelp, I guess a boring and somewhat competent is better than an entertaining trainwreck dangerous pick for my interests. I doubt he will make trump any more appealing to the swing voters.

Well, that pretty much removes the last chance for a consequential (for this year) floor fight at the convention.

Unless Trump is playing some sort of 3 dimensional chess and Pence is just a smokescreen for a more out of the box pick.

This pretty much confirms it (unless Trump changes his mind at the last second):

Since this looks like it's all but official now, let's move discussion of Pence as Trump's running mate to a separate thread:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=240759.0

Feel free to use this thread for Clinton veep discussion, or to discuss any doubts you have about whether Trump is actually going through with picking Pence.

Somewhat related to the Pence VP issue.  Mitch Daniels says no to governor encore, cites his enjoyment of his position at Purdue as a primary reason:

http://www.jconline.com/story/news/2016/07/14/mitch-daniels-says-no-possible-governor-encore/87078046/

DAMMIT.  Well, let's hope that Holcomb or Ballard are nominated and not that twit Bosma.

And in three hours the campaign will signal that it's Gingrich, and in eight they'll say it's Christie.

He's making the media dance so that this is all they talk about for the whole day. I wouldn't put much stock in anything until you hear a name from Trump himself.

Wait, what?  Why would she engage in bizarre media engineering to do this and not just tell Warren directly?  And wasn't this being accomplished by the significant buzz over Perez the previous news cycle anyway?

From my vantage point, Vilsack as her second pick is a vomitrocious omen, especially when Kaine is the #1.

Greg Ballard is the only Republican I would give a passing thought to voting for, but the GOP would never tap him.
