Newt really seems keen on trying to be VP tonight on Hannity.

Trump told donors in Bel-Air on Thursday evening he would announce his choice over the weekend.

So, its not Pence then.....
Pence could still drop out tomorrow and be officially chosen this weekend, from what I have heard he has both been offed and accepted to be Trumps running mate.

And we've been debating if its a ploy on this forum for the last several hours.  He still hasnt dropped out of the gov race.  He has what til noon friday?

Supposedly someone tweeted that Pence could get put back on the ballot at Indiana's GOP convention if he leaves the Gov race and is not selected as Trump's VP. However that would be a tall order since some Hoosier Republicans want to replace him
If Trump passes over Pence, he's screwed.  Gregg will run non-stop ads for the next four months about how Pence was trying to abandon his post.  We Hoosiers have keen BS detectors.

Somewhat related to the Pence VP issue.  Mitch Daniels says no to governor encore, cites his enjoyment of his position at Purdue as a primary reason:

http://www.jconline.com/story/news/2016/07/14/mitch-daniels-says-no-possible-governor-encore/87078046/

DAMMIT.  Well, let's hope that Holcomb or Ballard are nominated and not that twit Bosma.

Or one better. Pull a Kentucky and give it to Stutzman.

Don't know if there's still a glimmer of hope for Not-Pence, but just thought I'd mention that Gingrich is now calling for testing all Muslims in the US to see if they support sharia, then possibly deporting them:

This might be a dumb question, but why can't Pence file that he is running for reelection, then drop out if he gets the VP nod?

He proposed a similar method in 2012 to deal with illegals. He wanted to create "community boards" on a local level that would vote on each individual illegal immigrant to see whether or not they were worthy of amnesty. Newt's solution to everything is more government, which is ironic because he sure likes to rail about it.

Planned to wait to post this until Newt got the VP nod (which I was sure of until just a day or two ago) but since that appears unlikely, here goes.

Probably because of ballot access. The parties must submit their candidates till that deadline. Ballots probably can’t be changed afterward, so Pence’s name would remain on paper although he’s not running any longer. The GOP candidate who replaces him would have to ask for write-in votes (if that’s possible in IN). Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but sounds logical to me.

So apparently Trump will actually announce his pick today, though the joint appearance won't happen until tomorrow:

Essentially, he canceled all of this because he falsely believed this was another ISIS attack. Turns out it wasn't; Manafort said he "emotionally reacted" to events; Pence is left waiting and no one has any idea of what is going on. Face it, Trump is emotionally unstable and totally unfit to be President.

Of course he is. And he's a fraud, who has no clue about governing. He can't even run a campaign. No ground operation, no funding, no nothing. His whole campaign organization is a laughingstock.

So Trump pretty much freaked out not only over the tragedy in France but the campaign mechanics of picking a vice president

Pence makes me think Vilsack or Sherrod Brown slightly more likely, but Kaine still very possible. Thinking Latino stocks fell slightly.

^same. (@peteB)

Clinton-Kaine just feels right. I feel like it's sort of like Trump's choice with Gingrich, Christie, and Trump: his heart tells him to pick Christie or Gingrich because they have such good chemistry (like Clinton and Kaine) but his mind (and his Manafort) tell him to pick Pence. Hillary knows Warren would be a great attack dog, but she has a great personal relationship with Kaine and he all around is a Clintonian pick.

If you really want to drive home Pence's anti-women, anti-LGBT stances, why not go with Warren? She would be a great attack dog against both of them on the stump and bring energy and excitement. With the Pence pick, he is so boring that she needs to be bold and contrast in the most pronounced way.

Also interesting that Warren's Tuesday speaking slot seems to have been pulled - from Gabriel Debenedetti:

New: the beginnings of the D convention sked.

Maybe it was Pence who was the "break glass for Warren" choice. Or maybe Clinton preferred the energy and enthusiasm at her Warren rally compared to her Kaine rally yesterday. Or maybe not.

With Trump picking Pence, I think she would be best served with a Midwesterner who is somewhat popular with progressives for economic issues, or Elizabeth Warren. I don't think a Senate seat should be a concern compared to having the best ticket.

1. Sherrod Brown
2. Russ Feingold
3. Elizabeth Warren
...gap...
4. Tim Kaine
5. Tom Perez

Bayh jumping into the Indiana Senate race plus Kander polling very close to Blunt in Missouri might give Hillary more flexibility to pick a senator from a state with a GOP gov
