http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2016/04/15/john_kasich_tells_women_to_avoid_drunken_parties_so_they_don_t_get_raped.html

I thought you were taking Kasich out of context, but no you are not.

****

“I have two 16-year-old daughters, and I don’t even like to think about it,” Kasich said. Incidentally, neither do women. “It’s sad, but it’s something that I have to worry about,” the student responded.

“I’d also give you one bit of advice,” Kasich went on. “Don’t go to parties where there’s a lot of alcohol.” The crowd applauded him.

***

The only reason his disapprovals aren't as high as Trump/Cruz is because everyone has been ignoring him.

In all seriousness, while he has a shot there, he probably does better in RI.

If you want to feel safe, not going to parties with a lot of alcohol is bad advice why?

He didn't say that if you drink alcohol you'll get raped, he didn't even say that if you drink alcohol (get drunk) that it's your fault if you get raped.

He said, if you go to parties where a lot of alcohol is being drunk (presumably by young men) bad things might happen.

I'm not a parent and I don't now go to parties and didn't go to parties when I was a teenager or slightly older.  So, I don't know, is there anything factually wrong with what he said?  My understanding is that a fairly large percentage of rapes do occur at parties with alcohol.

I mean I don't think it's just conservative stuck up parents that are unhappy when they find out their teenage children (both sons and daughters) have been to alcoholic parties.

It is true that if you avoid parties where alcohol is being consumed (ie parties), you will be less likely to be raped.

It's also true that if you never leave your house, you will be less likely to be raped.

These are not realistic solutions though.

tl;dr:

I'm going to give you lots of care and help AFTER THE FACT, and do absolutely nothing to combat the culture of violence to PREVENT sexual harassment, assault, and hatred in the FIRST PLACE.  It's YOUR JOB to prevent violence by staying away from boozy parties.

Good luck!  I'm a moderate!

Again, it's right that if you live in a bubble and never have human contact, you will significantly reduce your chance of getting raped. It's not worth saying at all though.

If you want to feel safe, not going to parties with a lot of alcohol is bad advice why?

Because it denies the human agency of rapists and excuses their behavior.

"Be careful with food around your campsite" is good advice for avoiding problems with bears and raccoons. But we don't treat bears and racoons as people, and we certainly don't let them vote. What Kasich is implicitly saying is that its somehow unfair or wrong to create a standard that requires human beings to act decently (particularly towards women) thereby giving de facto permission for what is completely unacceptable, criminal and destructive behavior.

If Kasich had been asked about the Holocaust, and replied "Jews should have gotten out of Germany" his career would be over. Or, if he were God forbid, assassinated, no one would think that, "I guess he shouldn't have run for president" would be approrpirate.

It's still good advice -- tell your kids who are too young to drink alcoholic beverages to avoid places in which people are drinking heavily. Alcohol kills inhibitions to a man's sex drive and takes away a girl's ability to resist unwelcome sex. Alcohol almost qualifies as a date-rape drug.

I'm a Democrat, and I fully endorse that message.

Important point is also that the vast majority of rapes aren't done by strangers at drunk parties. So it's a false "solution" that detracts from a lot of the real problems.

Sorry, but that's utter BS.

There is nothing about drunk parties that would make rape particularly likely if there wasn't other factors at play. And it's ridiculous to think that it's on women to avoid parties if they want to feel safe.
