I have no qualms about having to go to a liquor store to buy beer and other alcohol. I'm just not a fan of state-run liquor stores.

What is the reasoning behind them?

NJ and OR politicos don't think their constituents are smart enough to pump gas safely*.  (probably accurate in NJ)  The "no beer at the grocery store" is a mix of churchies not wanting to see Bud ads when buying bananas and job protectionism.

*it's actually just protectionism too

Both are pretty stupid, but I don't think they're protectionist. At least, as I understand the term.

And I think the ban on alcohol in grocery stores is worse, because it sounds pretty inconvenient, while as a lazy person I wouldn't mind somebody pumping my car (if I had one) for me.

The second is far dumber.  I'd rather to pump my own damn gas and save the money.  As far as alcohol goes, that's never been an issue where I've lived.

New Jersey has the cheapest gas in the country. You aren't saving any money.

Eh, not quite.  Looks like Oklahoma and Texas have NJ beat, though I admit that I'm quite surprised about how cheap gas is in New Jersey.  Still, the cost would presumably be lower if gas stations didn't have to incur the labor costs.  Even if it's just a couple pennies, I'd still take them, and it's nice to get some fresh air anyways.

Something tells me you aren't a huge fan of pumping gas, eh? Tongue

Oh, I prefer pumping gas over having to ask some stranger to do it. I've never driven in NJ, and my only experience there was filling up trucks on-site for a place with its own supply. In PA, I have to do it for family and friends who have no clue how. But that used to be me.

I also believe I've heard that labour costs have to be spread out nationally rather than at the stations with the labour, but I'm not positive on how that is regulared.

Somebody always brings this up (though this is the first time I've heard claim it was cheapest in the country, usually the defense is "it's cheaper than NY") and it never makes any sense.  Somebody is paying the pump jockeys.
Both are pretty stupid, but I don't think they're protectionist. At least, as I understand the term.
The pump jockeys and the public employees that sell drink are always the loudest complainers when somebody tries to make these laws sane.  Maybe "protectionism" isn't the perfect word, but it's something just as bad.

I went with the beer one. I've seen a cop write someone a ticket for smoking a cigarette while pumping gas once. While its stupid, the gas regulation is at least on handling a dangerous chemical.

It's actually very unlikely (nearly impossible) for a lit cig to ignite gasoline while pumping it into a car.  They just don't get hot enough.  I'm not suggesting you should do it, just that it's not as dangerous as conventional wisdom (or even common sense) would lead you to believe.

I do understand the basic desire to keep the gas laws on the books. It's easy employment for people with little skills who would be on the dole otherwise, and it's not like the cost to business or consumer is overbearing or anything.

The first law, because the second law is perfectably reasonable.

Anyone worried about the safety hazards of gas - seems like it'd make more sense to focus your concern on the person who's being exposed to the gas and fumes all day in their pumping job.
