If I say Rock, Pop, and Electronic, I think those are all broad enough to cover most of the music I listen to. Tongue

Jazz, classical, rock. Particularly songs that feature a certain instrument in the lower register.

Hates the vast majority of modern music(music should be defined as between 1500 and 1920, none of this modern stuff they want to be recognized as a true "song")

Actually, on second thought, replace Pop with Jazz, since any Pop music I like would probably overlap with Rock or Electronic.

Eh, to each their own, my favorite music is from at least 1994-now.

Classical

Folk Music

Jazz

The best stuff's from around the time of Corelli and Pachelbel (1600's0 and ends after Elvis died on the can in the 70's.

Hates the vast majority of modern music(music should be defined as between 1500 and 1920, none of this modern stuff they want to be recognized as a true "song")

And just what is wrong with Gregorian chants?

With good reason.

Christian, Punk, Alternative.

I prefer to listen to those genres, however, that does not make Christian punk appropriate for Mass.

I clicked:

Alternative--when I was your age REM, Replacements, and especially Husker Du ruled the world and I'm still more excited about a Bob Mould release than anything else these days (he and his band can still kick your bands butt any day of the week).  The extent that I stay current in this genre is pretty limited to a Decemberist or Arcade Fire album here and there.

Other--New Orleans, which allows me the claim funk, blues, brass band, soul, jazz and R&B mixed various ways

I didn't click:

Country--because I don't listen to pop country, but I do listen to roots, americana, alt-country, outlaw country, whatever you want to call it

Classic Rock, Punk, New Wave, Grunge, Metal, Klezmer, and others get play on the stereo too.

Americana
Folk
Country

but I don't set limits on what I listen to. The best songs cross genres magnificently. (See: "In Bloom" by Sturgill Simpson for the latest marvel. Fant-abulous!)

It's kind of silly to have "Christian" as one category, do this and this fall into the same genre?

Well of course not. It was simply the set of options given and allowed me an easy selection of three, so I accepted the premises.

Admittedly I do listen to some more "normal" Christian pop in the car if nothing good is on the other stations and the song isn't too heretical. Some of it is even quite good. Some of it is bad country music. I was once mortally opposed to listening to such things but have since recognized I need to get over myself. Also the new rock/alternative station in Madison is too hardcore focused for my tastes for me to regularly listen to. I just get miserable and angry if I listen to too much of that type of music.

Wait, does the radio in Madison play real hardcore? Like the stuff I wanted Eurovision to have here?

Interestingly googling "Madison hardcore" unlike "Minneapolis hardcore" or "Milwaukee hardcdore" just gets lots of porn hits, thanks to the popularity of the name Madison amongst pornstars. Tongue

- Alternative
- Rock
- Classical, I guess

There's a lot of pop I like too, but also a lot I hate (and I'm not exactly sure where to draw the boundary there as well).

Hates the vast majority of modern music(music should be defined as between 1500 and 1920, none of this modern stuff they want to be recognized as a true "song")

I used to be in this category for many years in the mid 2000s. What is commonly defined as Classical was my favorite form of music. Though I don't think I have ever hated modern music and there were always a few that I enjoyed. This developed when I was young and they used to run advertisements for this in the late 1990's:

Which became the first CD I ever had. Its in pretty rough shape now, but I still have it.

I always loved the past and this went hand in hand with my love of history.

I always had a thing for folk music, particularly folk country and that bled over into folk rock. In the later parts of the 2000s, I fell in love with various songs, bands and singers from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I used to joke that I didn't much care for music past 1985, with exceptions. Of course that barrier broke down in 2012 and 2013. Now, my tastes are very diverse and range from Medieval tunes to modern pop music.

Punk,Rock and Metal would include 80ish percent of what I listen to.  There are a few rap and country artists I like, but I don't generally like the genres.

(Post-)Punk/Alternative Rock, Folk and Metal. Though I also listen to a lot of Classic Rock(Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Iron Butterfly, The Doors, CCR and the Animals), NWA and Public Enemy and Noise Rock(Big Black).
