Not 100% sure, but I would guess the credit card companies only care about the total, the total was already written.  If they put in a different total, they are possibly committing credit card fraud.

It could be, but this isn't entirely something new. Waitresses have been known to get rude/crude comments in the tip line in the past.

I'm skeptical that this really happened...I mean maybe you could tell she was a lesbian...but they can't be sure unless the waitress told them. 

If it did happen, well...if they come back, refuse to serve them...you have proof they pose a threat to you.

Seriously, you can't do that.

If true, the restaurant should absolutely refuse service to these customers in the future. Unfortunately, the last one of these stories that went viral turned out to be a hoax. That in no way means that this one isn't true, but people aren't wrong to be skeptical.

Yeah, and not even because of the legal reasons, for the moral reasons too.  You're not supposed to steal, even from bad people.  Yes there are scenarios where stealing is morally justified, but this ain't of them.
