Rep. Katherine Harris (R) announced today that she has decided to challenge Sen. Bill Nelson in 2006. From a statement released by her office:

"Today, after months of encouragement from friends and constituents, colleagues and advisors, many prayers, and with the love and support of my family, the time has come to launch a campaign for the United States Senate.

"I will formally announce my candidacy, and key members of my campaign team, in July – humbled by the task ahead but knowing in my heart that one of the greatest honors in life is having the chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

"I am confident that I can accomplish more for the people of Florida, and experience reminds me I’ve always done best when I started out as the underdog, ready with all my heart and soul to tell it like it is, and do what’s right."

I'd love to see her in the race just to annoy the Democrats and I think she could win it but there's no doubt that it would be much more difficult for her to win compared to other possible GOP candidates.

Katherine Harris is too polarizing a figure to win.

Floridians have moved past 2000. While I still think it would be an issue, it wouldn't be enough to guarentee a Harris defeat.

Just like how Jeb was going to have the toughest race in the country (mainly because of 2000) yet went on to win by about 14 points.

Your comparing Jeb Bush to Katherine Harris... Think about it.  She's not even that popular in her on CD.  Heck, her hometown newspaper did'nt endorse her campaign last election.

My prediction is she will do well among conservatives, but horrible among Democrats and Independents.

Of course she can win, but she will definitely be a dog to Nelson.  The last poll I saw had him beating her 46-39%.

Nelson should be able to keep his seat if he runs a competent campaign.

She's not popular in her own CD yet...she won re-election by ten points. Not amazingly popular but still popular it seems. Also, you bet I'll compare her to Jeb. Both were supposed to be ruined after the Florida recounts yet both won their elections rather easily.

I'm sure that they have moved on, but Harris's chances of picking up Democratic, and perhaps even independent votes is diminished.

Well it's a good thing that FL is becoming more Republican, now isn't it?  Smiley

Don't forget his brother's popularity in 2002 as well as the 9/11 impact on GOP candidates in 02, which is not the case anymore.  Harris also became more of a divisive figure than Jeb did.  Independents Jeb did rather well with in 02 Harris well won't

One major problem facing Harris is that she is not all that popular in her own district - in 2000, she won by only 10 points against a woman who I'm pretty sure was a no-name.

KH is not popular in her district, eh?  It's a relatively swingy district, if I recall, so its not unusual for a representative of a moderate Rep seat to be less popular than someone who is in a partisan Rep seat.

Whether the newspaper endorsed her or not isn't that important, as newspapers often don't swing with their constituents, though I don't know much about that particular paper.  Obviously, the voters didn't listen.

KH is a better candidate than people realize.  Democrats go insane when 2000 comes up, and are not capable of rational thought anymore.  Their ludicrous attacks on Jebby prove this well enough.  2000 was all Dems could talk about, but that's not what voters cared about.  I support KH if she's the nominee, but I'd prefer that those Tommy Franks rumors come true.
