The Lannisters found brand new allies in the Greyjoys, and Martells. After the three struck an alliance, Greyjoy ships carried Martell spearmen to Casterly Rock. The Stark's never knew what hit them, Robb had sent the majority of his army south to defend the Reach, thinking it was only a matter of time before Tywin surrendered. With his army nearly destroyed, Robb fled to Riverrun, sneaking around the Greyjoy's in the West.
The Greyjoy's were also surprised, the entire invasion force in the shield islands were suddenly attacked by a combined 40,000 Stark, and Tyrell soldiers, and were driven from the islands.
The Arryn's broke their silence on the war, and marched, with over 20,000 troops into the crownlands, and took Harrenhall.
Meanwhile, a massive Targaryen army landed in the crownlands, and took Storm's End, the seat of House Baratheon.
