I used to complain that the Democrats had no bench while the Republicans had a deep bench.  But the GOP absolutely blew out nearly every last one of its good candidates this year.  So now nobody has a damn bench.  It seems like our only choices are Paul Ryan for the GOP and a handful of random female senators for the Dems.

Let's think seriously about this Atlas.  We have a Clinton v. Cruz election.  If Clinton wins, who are the GOP's top five nominees?  If Cruz wins, who are the Democrats' top five nominees?

My picks:

GOP
1.  Paul Ryan
2.  Nikki Haley
3.  Brian Sandoval
4.  Ben Sasse
5.  Mike Lee

Democrats
1.  Cory Booker
2.  Tim Kaine
3.  Andrew Cuomo
4.  John Hickenlooper
5.  Antonio Villaraigosa

I don't think Kaine will run for President.

Hillary will probably be in the White House, but if not then I see this as the bench:

Booker, O'Malley, Hickenlooper, Baldwin, De Blasio, maybe Warren

This is my list, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if there were 5 or so more Republicans running. I'm guessing Clinton will be quite vulnerable in 2020. Here's the list:

Cruz (if he loses the nomination to Trump in 2016), Paul, Sasse, Ryan, Christie, Haley, Sandoval, Jindal, Walker (although he might sit it out if Ryan runs)

Paul?  Christie?  Jindal?  They'd be insane to run again.

Cruz, Haley, Ryan, Cuban, Pence

Kaine, Booker, Cuomo, Gutierrez, Gillibrand

Mark Cuban?

Yeah. He's my wildcard. I don't necessarily think he'll run, but he'll probably be part of the discussion. Certainly a more viable socially liberal option than Sandoval.

So Cuban will be floated as the "Trump candidate"?

Based on the tidbits so far in the tea leaves thread:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=233345.0

I'd say that the most likely Republican candidates so far include Cotton, Rubio, and Walker.  Probably Mike Lee too.  Ryan is surely a top tier contender for the nomination if he's interested.  And of course, if Cruz doesn't win the nomination this time, I'd give him a near 100% chance of running again in 2020, should Clinton win the GE this time.

One thing I'm trying to discern at the moment is the various shades of "Liberty" candidates.  Ron Paul is the prototypical "Liberty" movement candidate, or whatever they call themselves.  Rand Paul's a sort of diet version of that, and I take it that Ted Cruz would be classified more as a "Tea Party"er who tries to appeal to the "Liberty" folks on certain issues?  Is Mike Lee then someone who'd go in the Cruz category, while Justin Amash is closer to being a true blue Paul-ista?

Do some of these candidates crowd others out then?  For example, if Trump is nominated this time (and loses the GE), then when Cruz inevitably runs again in 2020, does that mean that Lee will back Cruz rather than run himself, because they'd have overlapping groups of supporters?
