If the person preaching ever swears, there's no gasps or immediate reactions. But you can actually feel sort of a delayed reaction like everyone is thinking "whoa, did they seriously just say that?" but it processes about 5 seconds too late. But all background noise and any side activity seems to halt.

On Sunday I could see a girl sitting in front of me was clearly texting. Then the woman speaking said "A lot of the views of purity that get pushed in our society are pretty f[inks]ed up." and she basically complete froze. I sort of also got the impression it'd cause a spit take from anyone drinking water/pop/coffee at that time too.

Happens in the LDS Church too, though much, much rarer than in most Protestant churches.

I'm starting to think that BRTD is a Seventh Day Adventist or the like.

A millennial/a mostly millennial one.

Nope. I even specifically said that this happened on Sunday.

I've never noticed this in church because priests generally don't swear from the pulpit. I have noticed it in other contexts though. Professors who swear in class will sometimes create that effect.

Never heard a pastor swear in my life - the closest was I remember one at my PCUSA church where the pastor was talking about how of all the swear words, saying "Oh my God" was the worst because it insults God's glory.  It was pretty much the only "harsh" sermon I remember from him, though it was delivered in a very soft-spoken way.

Never had that happen during that part of church. Is there something in the water in Utah or something? Or is it the air?

HAHA..he lives not far from an SDA church, and I've had some nice discussions with him about my experience as an Adventist.  At this point, I'm a pretty nominal one and have considered becoming a Seventh Day Baptist.

Your church sounds like the definition of a McChurch.

I actually live in easy walking distance of TWO SDA churches (they're about five blocks apart, I live between them) however one US predominantly black, the other predominantly Hispanic.

I find it interesting how diverse SDA churches are.  The church I attend is predominantly white, but probably because the area I live in is also overwhelmingly white.  But in urban areas, I'm impressed with how many Adventist churches are mostly black or Hispanic.  I wonder where they rank as far as denominations go.

I live within an hour's drive of Flint, which has some mostly black SDA churches.
