Hipsters don't like in Williamsburg anymore, it's mostly ad execs and bankers who pretend to be hipsters.

Yeah Williamsburg is so 2006 or whatever.

But more seriously, what exactly distinguishes an "authentic" hipster from the poseurs?

As a non-hipster, I assume if you have to ask....

The East Village was basically an even split (while Hillary dominated the rest of Manhattan).

Hillary won all but one precint in Chelsea, West Village, Greenwich where gay couples are over 20% of census tracts in 2011(Probably increased now)

However that one precint that voted for Bernie was located in a census tract that was only 6.3% gay.

I take it western Queens has a lot of "hipsters" now too - i.e. Astoria, LIC, Jackson Heights etc.

There seems to be a positive correlation for GOP enrollment and amount of votes for Bernie on the democratic side.

Given some registered democrats requested GOP ballots to vote for Trump and got denied its very likely that they got a democratic ballot anyway and voted for Bernie as a protest vote.

Most of the GOP areas of Staten Island had a lot of Bernie votes due to some runoff influence by pro-Trump sentiment in the same areas. Along with Woodlawn Heights, breezy point, Howard Beach, Ridgewood to Midwood, Whitestone, Morris Park, Bay ridge to Bensonhurst.

Very similar to Oklahoma and a lot of rural white working class areas where they couldn't vote for Trump and voted for Bernie as a protest vote.

I take it western Queens has a lot of "hipsters" now too - i.e. Astoria, LIC, Jackson Heights etc.

Astoria is white working class but a significant amount of muslim americans which helped Bernie since he also got 70%+ of the muslim vote in Michigan.

So Bernie's winning coalition in Astoria and Steinway includes young voters, Pro-trump democrats, muslim americans who make up close to 1/4th of the population in those two areas and the greek community which probably hopes that Bernie would be more conciliatory towards Greece by siding with them in their debt crisis dispute with the EU.

Jackson Heights is mainly hispanic.

LIC is a weird mix of both hispters, and working class whites and hispanics on the lower side which went for Hillary.

Right, didn't mean to suggest they were hipster or hipster-turned-yuppie dominated, but that they are certainly a presence in western Queens.

Jackson Heights is famously diverse, though Frederick Wiseman's doc about it did suggest early gentrification is occurring.

Astoria is about 40% college educated and one of the hottest real estate markets in the city, so surely it's undergoing gentrification.

Obviously all these area contain significant immigrant and working class populations too.

Mostly?  It's also 36% Jewish, 80% of whom are Orthodox.

Another useful map by nycelectionatlas (hehe)

http://www.nycelectionatlas.com/mapimages/pdf/2008presprimaryNYCHRC_age.pdf

Even though its almost a decade old and probably changed a lot.

Bernie won the "real hipster" parts of Greenpoint, Bushwick North, East Williamsburg.

Hillary won the Puerto Rican and Jewish parts of Williamsburg.

But back to the under-44 vote, One notable exception is that she did far better in Brooklyn Heights to Downtown Brooklyn to Park Slope than the other 21-44 areas. And thats mainly because these are not hipsters but the yuppie area.

Yes, there are gentrifying areas with high levels of "cultural capital" that aren't all that high income (Bernie) and more established, high income gentrified areas (Hillary).

I knew that Bensonhurst was right leaning. It's a Trump enclave.

Surprised that Sanders got more votes in Bensonhurst/Dyker Heights/Bath Beach than Trump.

Western Queens is a big mix. But lots of young Manhattan families have moved into LIC, Astoria, and Sunnyside. Still lots of Greeks in Astoria. Lots of Latino, Asian (South Asian, Korean) in the area too.

Most Greeks would be pretty far removed from Greece. I doubt monetary policy toward it is a huge issue. They're probably just voting Sanders because otherwise they fit the demographic for him well.

Well if there's anywhere Greece is a ballot box issue, it's Astoria.
