Would you say that the "populist vote" is geographically, culturally, historically and even economically divided in two halves, one less racially charged and located in New England, the Upper Midwest, the Great Plains, the Mountain States and the Northwest, and the other more racially charged and located in the South, Appalachia, the Rust Belt and the Southwest?

Don't care where they are located, just wish they'd relocate back to their more natural party. Wink

So you're saying the two different coalitions would look something like this?

Yes, more or less. The red one would be more likely to support a Ross Perot or a Pat Buchanan? and the blue one would be more likely to support a George Wallace or a Donald Trump.

The problem is that this is basically your electoral base, and you can't win without it.

I think of it as ideological populism (red in Goldwater's map) vs identity populism (blue).

And your electoral base is poor and lower-middle class folks, especially minorities.  Each party could obviously not get away with being elitist.

I think you don't understand what I wanted to say.
You can't pray for all of them to leave your party to join the democratic party because this is basically your electoral base, so your party would basically disappear.

I'm not wishing minorities to leave the democratic party, so that's not a problem for me Tongue.

I think there's tons of room for non-business types in the GOP, I'd just honestly take the Puritan types (not like the GOP has ever been without a lot of them) over some odd reincarnation of Dixiecrats.

Give us the Deep South and Appalachia and you can have New England. Deal?

2012 election map with the changes you suggested:

386-152

Yeah, no deal. Tongue

^ But in return Trump would never have been competitive in the GOP primary. Those defections are what's causing the GOP to abandon your type of libertarian conservatism.

Yellow: 77
Green: 76
Red: 24
Blue: 23

101 EV(Yellow+Red) v. 99 EV(Green+Blue)

You might want to be more specific, Mr. Priebus and Mrs. Wasserman-Schultz. Tongue

2012 map using the Goldwater-SG deal:

273(D)
265(R)

Presumably, Scott Brown or Chris Christie or Walter Jones is the GOP populist in this scenario, while Trump might run as a Democrat.

This is agreeable. With New Jersey, Ohio, Iowa, Delaware, Michigan and Missouri being swing states.

South is bigger. If  demographic trends of last decades will continue - soon no one could afford to lose South. Cotton was "the King" in 19 century, now South pretends to be "the King"...
