- he is much younger than the other candidates. He is supposed to be healthier, more energetic, hard working,
- he is better educated,  Princeton + Harvard,
- he is smart, he managed to vote down pro-Trump delegates,
- his wife looks fine and is sure to make the best First Lady,
- he opposes gay marriage, abortions, legal use of Marijuana.
After New York defeat Cruze has chances to win at contested convention, his skills taken into account.

As soon as you take out the religious vote Cruz falls flat.    He lost New York because there's virtually no evangelical vote there.    The same will be true in a General Election,  anywhere that he can't come VERY close to a majority of the vote with religious voters...he's simply doomed.

You (and many others) laugh at positions that were so normal up through the 80s that no one ever thought they would go out of favor with the public.  In the 80s you didn't have to say you were in favor of traditional marriage... it was expected that everyone was!

To the OP, liking Ted Cruz is about equivalent as liking a hole in your head. Gun to my head, I'd prefer Trump over Cruz because at least Trump seems willing to negotiate whereas Cruz is just an ideologically driven obstructionist partisan religious nut job hack.
