Out of the two Democrats who lost 49-state landslides, which one did worse?

McGovern deselecting his initial running-mate is hard to beat.

McGovern couldn't even get labor behind him. Ofc, he was dealing with the brilliant Nixon behemoth  .

Nixon cheated.

I'd have to go with Mondale. Reagan basically gave him Minnesota and he still almost lost it.

Mondale. McGovern had a lot against him, also counting against him was that he was and is probably the most liberal nominee for President ever (of the two main parties). Eagleton wasn't his fault, and as we all know Nixon didn't play the election by the books.

WI: Alf Landon, still the least EVs on record and he didn't even leave Kansas

Mondale did well considering the Reagan behemoth and lingering anti-Carter stigma, Ferraro and the anti-Nuke parts aside.

And McGovern was never supposed to actually take off and wouldn't have if not for the Canuck Letter. It's really no wonder the running mate thing came as it did.

What's Landon's excuse though?

McGovern.

On the issues, Mondale's campaign was strong. Except during the age moment, Reagan was weak in the debates. Much weaker than in 1980. Maybe that also had something to do with his Alzheimer's disease.

I don't think Landon thought he would win.  Probably just accepted the inevitability of his loss so decided not to waste money and time campaigning.

Remember that the polls in 1936 showed a close race. FDR's overwhelming victory came as surporise.

If you're judging by the final results, then Mondale.  He came with several thousand votes of losing in all 50 states.  And he also pledged to raise taxes, something that is utterly stupid for any candidate to do.

If you're judging by the campaign itself, however, then it would have to be McGovern.  He was like the Democrats' equivalent of Barry Goldwater or Donald Trump: a nominee too extreme for even many party faithful to support.  That was a big reason for the Nixon landslide that year.

I don't think McGovern ever did anything as daft as promising to raise taxes.
