Within the admittedly already quite privileged subset of people who attend these kinds of Colleges, I highly doubt liberal campus activists are those with the wealthiest parents.

There might be some merit to the argument, but the tacked-on political stuff is kind of silly.

You might be surprised.

Agreed.  It's such a small chunk of the overall college experience for 99+% of students, yet it attracts so much journalistic attention.  As far as helicopter parenting goes in general, I don't see much here that I'm aware of, though it might be more endemic elsewhere.

Helicopter parenting will impact the kid's decision-making abilities down the road in my opinion. Since the parents want to control every single aspect of the child's life from what clothes they wear to school today, what food they get at dinner, all the way to what college the kid will go to down the road, people are growing up used to having decisions made for them.

You got this wrong. Parents have always wanted to control what children eat for dinner or what they wear. Helicopter parents let the kids have their own way while still hovering over them constantly defending their choices.

This really isn't a Liberal-Conservative thing.

Parents are both resigning their responsibility, but at the same allowing their precious little bundles to go through life with no responsibility for their own choices. Basically, it's never their faults... they find someone else (teachers, "society", the media)

True helicopter parents are brutal and enforce responsibility on their kids.

You see the same sort of thing in the widespread support of Bernie Sanders among young people. Very sad phenomenon, hopefully they grow out of it.
