What if George Wallace, for what reason ever, had captured the Democratic nomination in 1968? He faces Nixon in a two way match. This would have been the first election since 1904, that the GOP nominee is more to the left than the Democrat.

I can see only one plausible way of Wallace being the 1968 Democratic nominee in a two-way race. Said way is that he was successfull in his initial 1958 gubernatorial attempt, when he ran as a moderate and managed to stay on the course while Governor, thus fitting the party's line. In such case, he would be a very attractive candidate (a popular pro-civil rights Southerner, appealing to the North, as well as moderate Southern voting bloc).

Wallace as we know from OTL? No way.
