DEAN WINS NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY

Howard Dean built on his win in Iowa by dominating in New Hampshire. He swept all counties and finished more than 10% ahead of his nearest challenger, Sen. Kerry. On the Republican side, Lincoln Chafee surprised everyone by receiving 22% of the vote.

Howard Dean 38.7%
John Kerry 25.3%
Wesley Clark 17.1%
John Edwards 8.8%
Joe Lieberman 7.5%

George Bush 74.2%
Lincoln Chafee 22.5%

LIEBERMAN DROPS OUT: Won't "Rule Out" Independent Bid

Delegates:
Dean 29
Kerry 22
Edwards 9
Clark 4
Gephardt (4)

With the race essentially a 4-way battle, Dean appears to be breaking away as frontrunner.

National Poll
Howard Dean 36%
John Kerry 20%
Wesley Clark 15%
John Edwards 8%

George Bush 72%
Lincoln Chafee 15%

Chafee: "Bush can't ignore us forever!"

Heading into Mini Tuesday, the biggest states are Missouri, South Carolina, and Arizona. Here are polls for those states:

Missouri: Dean 41, Clark 22, Kerry 17, Edwards 6
South Carolina: Dean 29, Edwards 21, Kerry 18, Clark 14
Arizona: Dean 35, Kerry 24, Clark 17, Edwards 5

DNC leaders are pressuring Edwards to drop out, but he has declared he will stay in until South Carolina.

February 2, 2004

Wolf Blitzer: Hello and welcome to our coverage of Mini  Tuesday!

Tonight there are seven contests across the country and we'll be looking to see if Howard Dean can maintain his lead.

Anderson Cooper: And on the Republican side, we're looking to see if Sen. Chafee can catch up to President Bush anywhere.

Wolf Blitzer: And it's 8:00 so polls have just closed in Delaware and South Carolina. We can now make a projection!

DEAN WINS DELAWARE
Our exit poll data shows a close race between Dean and Edwards in South Carolina.

Anderson Cooper: A close race in South Carolina could be interesting; it is worth a number of delegates and Edwards has poured everything into this state.

Wolf Blitzer: The clock reads 8:54 and we're awaiting returns from Missouri, North Dakota, and  Virginia (on the Republican side only). However, we can now project that Sen. Dean has won South Carolina.

9:00
Anderson Cooper: We can project more states: Senator Dean has won in Missouri and Wesley Clark has won North Dakota. The president has won every state so far, with Chafee's best being 27% in Delaware.

*magic fast forward to the end of the night*

CHAFEE CONCEDES AFTER GETTING SWEPT

EDWARDS, KERRY SUSPEND CAMPAIGNS. BOTH ENDORSE DEAN

The party assembles for Howard Dean

Howard Dean and Wesley Clark are the only candidates to have won states so far in this campaign. Dean holds a large delegate lead, but Clark is determined to give it a fair fight. Dennis Kucinich remains in the race, having failed to receive more than 5% anywhere. Rev. Al Sharpton withdrew after similarly never hitting 5%.

With President Bush having locked up his party's nomination, he can focus on governing. Recent protests with his handling of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, have plummeted his job approval, currently sitting at just 38%.

National Poll
Howard Dean 59%
Wesley Clark 26%
Dennis Kucinich 3%

Howard Dean 49%
George Bush 43%

Wesley Clark 52%
George Bush 40%

Howard Dean 45%
George Bush 38%

Michael Bloomberg 10%

DEAN WINS MICHIGAN AND WASHINGTON; CLARK CONCEDES

Howard Dean appears to have won the Democratic primary, facing only token opposition from here on out. Following Wesley Clark's suspension, Dean made a speech promising to "take on George W Bush together with the help of the American people."
After hitting Bush on his handling of the Middle East and promising progressive solutions he embarked on his tour of potential swing states.

General Election Polling
Howard Dean 53%
George W Bush 43%

Howard Dean 46%
George W Bush 40%
Michael Bloomberg 7%

Howard Dean 48%
George W Bush 40%
Joe Lieberman 4%

Bush vs. Dean Swing State Map

At Dean: 273 vs. Bush: 199, the current conditions seem to be favorable for the Democrats. However, if Bush's approval, sitting in the low 40s, begins to rise, this will shift Republican fast. The addition of Lieberman or Bloomberg to the race, and Dean's VP choice, will change things as well.

AMERICANS DEMAND ACTION AGAINST TYRANNICAL HUSSEIN

President Bush's approval ratings continue to fall following the the bombing of civilian hospitals in Iraq. "All this," says presumptive Democratic nominee Howard Dean, "and they can't get the guy they're going after! This president can't take care of Hussein even while committing atrocities!" Bush made a speech telling Americans to calm down and assured them the conflict would be resolved. Following this, Dean fought back, "your war-hungry hands won't do anything to stop this! Your party isn't moving america forward, you're Moving America Backwards! We're the ones moving this country forward!"

National Polls

Howard Dean: 55%
George Bush: 41%

The Bush campaign is in a panic as Dean's lead grows; both candidates are preparing for their respective campaigns.

Democratic Primary Final Map:

Gov. Howard Dean, VT
Gen. Wesley Clark, AR
Sen. John Kerry, MA
Sen. John Edwards, NC

LIEBERMAN, BLOOMBERG, CHAFEE ALL CONSIDERING THIRD-PARTY BID

Will they? Won't they? All three moderates have historically deviated from party lines. In polls, Bloomberg reached the highest, at 12%, with Lieberman and Chafee in the mid-single digits.

DEAN PROMISES PUERTO RICO STATEHOOD

Cleveland, OH
Democratic nominee Howard Dean: There are some American citizens in this country who are not given adequate rights. No, today, I'm not talking about members of the LGBT community. I'm talking about Puerto Ricans! For so many years Puerto Rico has been denied full federal rights, just because it isn't a state! My fellow Americans, this must end.

ON MY FIRST DAY IN OFFICE, PUERTO RICO
WILL BECOME A STATE. Whenever politicians have to campaign in Puerto Rico, I know they all say this. But I'm telling you all, here in Cleveland, not San Juan, that Puerto Rico will be a state under President Dean!

MSNBC: This speech has ignited a fury of discussion. It will be sure to be met with some opposition, but no politician has suggested this at such a great level before. It's a shocking move, and we'll see how it's met.

Polls:

Ohio Presidential Poll
Howard Dean 48%
George Bush 43%

Virginia Presidential Poll
Howard Dean 45%
George Bush 42%

Florida Presidential Poll
Howard Dean 46%
George Bush 45%

National Poll
Howard Dean 53%
George Bush 41%

Puerto Rico Statehood Poll
Yes 74%
No 15%

Puerto Rico Poll
Howard Dean 72%
George Bush 18%

SENATOR CHAFEE EARNS LIBERTARIAN BID AT LNC

The Libertarian nominee delivering his victory speech.

IRAQI ARMY CONTINUES TO GAIN STRENGTH OVER U.S.

Bush's war in Iraq has been going horribly. First off, he couldn't depose of Hussein. Then, he lost territory previously held by the U.S. And now, a civil war has begun to start. Politicians from both sides of the aisle have come out against President Bush. Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chris Dodd (D-CT), Lincoln Chafee (L-RI) and John McCain (R-AZ) have begun to look at legislation to take away Bush's power as commander-in-chief due to his abysmal handling of the current situation. A recent poll showed that only 24% of americans think the president is doing a good job handling Iraq. 60% of people likely to vote for him don't think he's doing a good job. On the other side, Howard Dean is coming out strong on the anti-war side, wanting to establish democracy in Iraq through diplomacy, not slaughter.

HERSETH WINS AT-LARGE ELECTION FOR SOUTH DAKOTA HOSUE SEAT

In a shocking move, liberal lawyer and Democrat Stephanie Herseth has been elected to the House to replace Republican Representative Bill Janklow (R-SD), convicted of manslaughter. This puts control of the House at 227-207 Republican, with one independent. This just shows how anti-war sentiment has gotten even to South Dakota.

POLLS:

South Dakota Presidential Poll:
George Bush 47%
Howard Dean 46%

National Poll:
Howard Dean 54%
George Bush 42%

Chapter II: The Investigation

#NEVERBUSH MOVEMENT GROWING AMONG REPUBLICANS

A large amount of Republicans are defecting from George Bush, planning to stay home, vote for Dean, or vote third party. Bush's popularity is rapidly decreasing, and it's certainly showing in General Election polls. A leader of the movement, wishing to remain anonymous, said they would not try to run their own campaign, endorsing Chafee instead.

Chafee: Oh ****, the phone is ringing. Who could it be?

CALLER: Nevermind who I am right now. I have some great dirt on Bush. It could make your presidential campaign and ruin Bush's career. I just want to help.

Chafee: Aw, shucks. This is gonna be great!

CALLER: But you've gotta promise me one thing.

Chafee: Gee whiz, I'll do anything!

CALLER: You've gotta promise to shut down the Department of Education and the EPA.

Chafee: Well, as i said, I'll do anything. Looks like I've gotta take some mainstream conservative positions now. Ah well...

NEXT UP: Conventions and the aforementioned investigation[/b]

At Chafee Campaign Headquarters

Chafee: My friends, I received a call last night. This guy told me he had great dirt on Bush, and he had friends at the Washington Post investigating it. He said if we play this right, we could ruin Bush's career. But there are 2 or 3 caveats.

1: We must stay silent until after the RNC, because they could otherwise nominate someone else.
2: We've got to pivot to the right, because I promised the guy and in order to win more votes.
3: We should pick a Republican VP, probably an anti-Bush.

Staffer: Sorry to interrupt, Mr. Chafee, it's John Warner.

Chafee: Hmm... Ok, meeting ajourned! But make sure to follow those three points.
(to staffer) Warner, you say? What's he want?

Staffer: I don't know, Mr. Chafee.

Chafee: Hey, John.

Warner: As you may know, I'm fairly heavily invested in this NeverBush thing.

Chafee: Yes, I do.

Warner: And I was wondering if you'd like my endorsement.

Chafee: Golly! Gee whiz! Is that so? Why, thank you so much, Senator. I'd love it!

Warner: Count on it!

But little did they know, the end had only just begun. Tune in next time on The Dubya Downfall  for some more excitement. Comments welcome!
