October 13, 2004 - Or, The End of the Chafee Surge

At the final debate, Lincoln Chafee was questioned about a particular vote.

Moderator: As a candidate this year, you have promised to give less power to the banks and have attacked Speaker Gingrich on his quest to repeal Glass-Steagall. Why, then, did you vote to repeal Glass-Steagall in 1999?

Chafee: (stumbling) The... Glass-Steagall was my very first vote, I'd just arrived, my dad had died in office... I just arrived to Senate. I think we get some takeovers and that was one. It was my very first vote, and it was 95, 90 to 5. The record.

Or, as the newspapers said, CHAFEE - IS HE QUALIFIED? Senator states he had no idea what he was voting for on crucial Glass-Steagall Bill

RCP Polling Average Post Final Debate

Dean/Daschle 47%
Gingrich/Pataki 33%
Chafee/Paul 8%

A 10% drop for Chafee following abysmal debate performance!

Also: Yay Puerto Rico! (Since they get statehood now)

Considering keeping this going, how would y'all feel about that?

I'd be very happy to see it going further. I can see Obama running in 2012, probably against Clinton and Daschle. I can't see Gingrich or Bush trying again though. Maybe Pataki or Cheney have a run in 2008 as well. Either way, the open primary in 2012 will be very interesting.

I would definitely like to see how Dean's presidency goes.

Howard Dean entered his presidency down 53-47 in the Senate, but up 226-209 in the House. He faced a split supreme court, all this despite a 10 point victory. His task was made harder when Chief Justice Rehnquist announced he'd be resigning in May, with Sandra Day O'Connor expected to join him soon. Never mind that he had to make Puerto Rico a state and deal with the mess in Iraq...

I'm bad at writing about government and coming up with that stuff

Respectfully disagree but I totally understand where you're coming from
