The fact that it gets so much hate from liberal intellectuals already puts it in the FP category for me, at least with respect to America.  We're the greatest nation on Earth, by God's grace and our grit.  We're the guardians of freedom and the last, best hope on Earth. We get so much hate for asserting our rightful place, but the simple fact remains that the US has done more for liberty and democracy than any other nation on Earth.  We deserve to be proud of our great country, the best nation in the world.

Nationalism in general is harmful, but an undertone of civic nationalism with strong protection for minority rights is probably a helpful thing in a country with large immigration illegal immigration.

Nationalism was originally, as far as I can tell, a liberal project. Naturally, once the liberals had succeeded, they needed to then begin reversing--or at least undoing--their own gains, for the sake of liberalism. Capitalism, constitutionalism, liberty, equality, and so on. All constructed by liberals to later be torn down by them, in one sense or another. To complain about what nationalism has wrought is to complain about, like, what, every nation-state as well as the totality of the modern canon.

Footnote: I believe there was one ex-Nazi who once remarked that, in light of his education on the Enlightenment, the actions of the Nazi regime made perfect sense. I'll have to ask my prof about that for some specifics.
