"Sanders Says He's Lost States Because 'Poor People Don't Vote'" - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2016/04/24/bernie-sanders-poor-people-vote_n_9767858.html

As the article notes, Poor people have supported Clinton 55-44 among the states that have had primaries so far. Sorry, Sanders, but the poor aren't helping you.

Someone ought to inform ol' Bernie that poor Democrats are disproportionately non-white so he should be careful what he wishes for.

Sanders' campaign, unfortunately, has really turned out to be like a conglomeration of all the worst stereotypes of latte liberals (or latte socialists, in this case.) He talks about the how the poor are disenfranchised all the time, but his campaign has not been about registering poor people to vote or helping them get to the polls. The Clinton campaign has done vastly more of that. Instead, his campaign has been all pandering to rich white college students. He spends tons of money holding huge rallies which, obviously, actual poor people working three jobs can't afford to attend, spends a ton of money on tv ads which actual poor working people won't be at home sitting around on the couch to see, and his cutsey volunteer army isn't composed of -- and has no strategy to reach out to -- actual poor working people.

Although I'm a Clinton supporter and I probably would be one regardless of what campaign Sanders had run I really, from the bottom of my heart, would be extremely happy if his campaign had been about helping really poor, disenfranchised voters get to the polls and giving them a voice. Unfortunately, that's not what his campaign has been about and him saying this now is just a bunch of hot air.

The poor don't support Sanders, Clinton wins the poor because of her support with Minorities.

Poor whites?  Maybe.  It'd be interesting to see if Sanders or Trump got more votes from poor white people.

Clinton is winning rich people by an even bigger margin, though.

His statement wasn't accurate, but it certainly didn't warrant a couple of the comments above. Roll Eyes

Groups with higher turnout are more competitive. This is a fact.

He's right in that there has been low turnout on the Democratic side, and as per usual, poorer people do not vote for a conglomeration of reasons (disenfranchisement is definitely in there). That being said, the evidence points to that demographic leaning Clinton nonetheless. Why that's the case I'll never understand. Hasn't been the first time people vote against their own interests.

As a quick besides, gotta love this particular portion in this trash-heap of a post. Considering, y'know, how Clinton fundraisers are free and open to the general public. Not surprising knowing how often Clintonites plug their ears at their own blatant hypocrisy.

He spends tons of money holding huge rallies which, obviously, actual poor people working three jobs can't afford to attend.

Same. Then it became evident that he's never had to interact with brown people his entire political career.

Poor whites?  Maybe.  It'd be interesting to see if Sanders or Trump got more votes from poor white people.

Well, to take Wisconsin as an example (since it's one of the whiter states to vote since the GOP field shrunk), if my algebra's right, the exit poll says that 37% of Sanders supporters make under $50k a year, while for Trump it's 33%.  (Though of course, even in Wisconsin, some of those Sanders supporters are non-white, moreso than the Trump supporters, so the gap would probably narrow a little if you only looked at poor whites.)

However, Trump has won more votes total than Sanders has nationwide, so it's possible that Trump is slightly ahead of Sanders with poor whites nationally.  It's probably pretty close though.

If the numbers in the article are accurate, he's doing better with poor people than non-poor people, even if you ignore race (which you really should).

Sanders might have had an earlier shot had he gone after Hillarys obvious weaknesses.   Shes corrupt and pandering crook on top of the illegal emails.     He had his shot its too late now.

I crunched the numbers! Exit polling sucks when it comes to measuring actual poor people on the GOP side; only 6 of the 20 states where exit polling was available had a big enough of a sample to crunch the numbers. For the other 14, I just used the statewide totals - because of that and due to the fact that there tends to be a slight lean toward Trump among poorer votes, take it with a grain of salt.

I did two: one with Trump vs Sanders where I just put their vote totals head-to-head in a two-way model, and one with Trump vs Sanders vs Clinton vs Cruz. The precise data is available below:

Yeah, Sanders is easily winning the lower-income white vote, but we don't live in a white-only society so that's just a data point and doesn't say much anything about the lower-income vote at all.

I think he means across the entire spectrum. So what Jfern is saying is that he's doing better with poor African-Americans then he is doing with African-Americans as a whole, he's doing better with poor whites than he's doing with whites as a whole, etc. (I'm not necessarily agreeing as I really don't know, just clarifying.)

Also:

No personal responsibility from this guy, just like his rabid college kid fans. Blames everyone for his problems and failures but himself. SAD!

As crude as Lief's comment is, I really agree. The problem isn't that group XYZ didn't turn out, it's that Sanders didn't, or couldn't, turn them out. It's kind of like complaining about someone not understanding the importance of voting. It's not really their fault if you didn't inform them, and if you did and they still didn't get it, then they wouldn't have voted for you anyway. It's kind of like wondering why high-school students don't value doing their homework when it's never made clear to them why it will be important when applying to College. Either those kids don't care about College, or they were never told why in the world it matters.

To what extent is Sanders' low income support due to college students and college-educated people just starting out in their careers etc.?
