I would consider myself to be fiscally conservative/socially liberal, but I am by no means a libertarian. I don't want to be associated with people who support abolishing the minimum wage, legalizing heroin, going back to the gold standard, and etc. I don't support any of the fringe positions that most libertarians support. I just mostly side with mainstream Republicans on economics issues and with mainstream Democrats on social issues. Being fiscally conservative/socially liberal is not the same thing as being libertarian. What would you call someone whose fiscally conservative/socially liberal? Also, people who identify as fiscally conservative/socially liberal are great, especially when they're not libertarians.
FYI, you can be a libertarian and not want legalized heroin, back on the gold standard or abolishing the minimum wage.  And not even be all that weird.
But can you be a nation building neocon and still be a libertarian? Grin

Or fiscally conservative, socially liberal suburban soccer moms who are afraid those fascist Republicans will take us back to the Dark Ages.
So yo you hate southern populists, suburban soccer moms, left wingers, and "tea party" style conservatives? If you were a politician, just who exactly would be your base? Tongue

"Fiscal conservatism" isn't an actual ideology.

I'd just call you a moderate libertarian. Libertarianism, despite what some purists might claim, is a big-tent ideological leaning like "conservative" or "liberal."

I am generally using the American terminology, though. In Europe, you'd probably be called a "conservative liberal." "Classical liberal" may work as well, but it generally implies a slightly more radical version of libertarianism, I think--I'm more of a classical liberal, you're more of a conservative liberal, probably.

Libertarian doesn't necessarily mean socially liberal.  Libertarians and socons tend to agree on such social issues and guns and affirmative action.

I forgot we started including that group in the exit polls.

If you mean people who are Republicans but disagree with the party platform on a few of its more regressive social policies and dislike the fire-breathing contingent of largely Southern social conservatism, then I'm there with you and I'd call you a moderate Republican.

Seriously though, what is with Illinois Republicans and not realizing their party has left them? I mean, for god's sake, the vast majority of Republicans are voting for either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz! Seriously guys, something like two thirds of the vote has gone to an authoritarian bigoted protectionist or a far right religious zealot. I'm not lying, look it up! You guys are just as bad as West Virginia Democrats. Actually, even worse. At least all of them vote Republican for everything now and are just too lazy to update their registration. This would seriously be the equivalent of an ultra conservative WV Democrat watching the debate between liberal Hillary Clinton and socialist Bernie Sanders and thinking "yeah, that's my party! Cheesy"

We of course differ on what anyone should be entitled to (or at least the practical means to take to "entitle them").  I see setting up a barrier based on skin color as different than on income, you don't, whatevs.

I'd just call you a moderate libertarian. Libertarianism, despite what some purists might claim, is a big-tent ideological leaning like "conservative" or "liberal."
It's never purists that are the problem here.  It's almost always your hard leftists that totally don't understand libertarianism.  They'd still think Somalia was a libertarian paradise (and I'm sure some of them still do) if we didn't make fun of them about it for years.  These are not smart people.  Hence their political affiliation.

(I'm not saying ALL hard leftists don't understand it, just 80% of them....I suppose it is possible many of them do understand it and are just liars....this group does lie a lot, so it's entirely plausible)

Do you want it to trigger me?

Seriously though, I'd call you a conservative-liberal. Like, I dunno, VVD or a Cameron Tory or whatever.
Liberal conservatism?

I would call you a Rockefeller/George Romney Republican. A typical pre-Religious Right conservative.
Once again, supporting public healthcare and civil rights isn't remotely conservative.
How is supporting civil rights not conservative?  Can't you be conservative and pro-civil rights at the same time?
I'm not talking about segregation... I mean things like spying, torture, and social issues in general.

Subtly, a different concept:

The big difference might be on foreign policy and national security stuff.  Plus, a libertarian would side with the right on religious liberty and guns, while a social liberal would not.  Also, a libertarian would abolish the Federal Reserve, while a fiscal conservative would not.

The traditional hard-leftist cariacture of a libertarian is typically Ayn Rand. But libertarians could also include people from techno-utopians to Ron Paul to traditional conservative-libertarians to what is probably the largest group - "leave me alone" soft-libertarians like Clint Eastwood.

A centrist. Centrism is just a collection of positions that in total do not add up to a specific ideology.
