Today are hold in Morroco elections to renew the House of Representatives but also local and regional authorities (first time the three elections are organized at the same time, in a effort to increase the turnout). The House of Representatives (lower house of the Morrocan Parliament) has 395 members elected for five-year terms, 305 seats are elected in 92 close-list multi-seat constituencies (around 2-6 seats), while the other 90 MP are filled in a nationwide constituency with two lists reserved for women' representation (60 seats) and national youth (under-40, 30 seats, also divided for gender for first time in this election)

Opinion polls are forbidden, but experts predicts that the rulling party, moderate islamic Justice and Developement Party (125/395 MPs elected in 2016) of PM Saadeddine El Otmani will drop their caucus, mostly due to internal fights and the management of pandemic. Also experts projects an improvement of the fourth-largest party in the last elections, centre-right National Rally of Independents (37/395 in 2016) led by one of the most wealthiest businessmen in Morroco aside of King Mohammed (Aziz Akhannouch, also Minister of Agriculture of the current government).

At noon local time the reported turnout was around 12% (full turnout in 2016 was 42%), more than 18 million are registered to vote (in a country whose population is around 33-37 million). Official results will start to release around midnight local time.

2016 result:
Justice and Development (islamic): 125 (in government)
Authenticity and Modernity (reformist, centre-left): 102
Istiqlal Party (conservative): 46
National Rally of Independents (liberal): 37 (in government)
Popular Movement (agrarian, centre-right): 27 (in government)
Socialist Union of Popular Forces (socialdemocratic): 20 (in government)
Constitutional Union (centrist): 19 (in government)
Party of Progress and Socialism (democratic socialist): 12
Democratic and Social Movement (royalist, centre-right): 3
Federation of the Democratic Left (left-wing): 2
Union and Democracy Party (conservative): 1
Green Left Party (green): 1

In what respect to regional and local elections, the 12 moroccan regions will renew their regional councils for a six-year term (678 seats in total), in 2015 election, PAM won 5 regions, RNI, PJD and PI with 2 each one, and MP one. In the local side, more than 31k councilors are set to be renewed and in 2015, PAM and PI had most seats nationwide but PJD won in the urban areas (Rabat, Salé, Tanger, Kénitra, Meknès, Marrakech, Agadir and Fès). Turnout in that elections was over 53%.

Massive defeat of the Justice and Development Party, from 1st place to 8th place. The National Rally of Independents (RNI), a liberal party, won most seats.

The junior parties in the coalition gained and the governing party collapsed. I know the King still wields a great deal of political power, but otherwise…what’s the deal?
