I know that Reagan named Schweiker before the 1976 convention, and the consensus seems to be that the move backfired (or at least didn't help). Are there any other examples of a major party presidential candidate naming their running mate before the national convention?

I think you mean before they had enough votes to win at the convention, right?

(and in Cruz's case, when someone is mathematically impossible to win the convention on a first ballot)

Yeah, I guess I should have said "before they were the presumptive nominee".

I can think only of Reagan, picking Schweiker in 1976. We can, of course, count incumbents that announced they'll be running with their VPs well ahead of time.
