Proud Liberal, and I despise the term "Flyover Country" because of how it reeks of classism and elitism.

Let's be honest. Who's travelling to Indiana unless for Notre Dame or some sporting event?

No.  Only Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming are in that category.

Don't insult Montana like that.

Isn't any state that's not on a coast considered "flyover country"?

Indiana is in the song "flyover states" https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W1GZzucDMlQ. But no Indiana is the crossroads of America. If anything, we are the state people drive through to get to Chicago Detroit or Ohio.

Of course not. It was home for several years to the single greatest artistic and cultural event in the world.

I flew from JFK to SFO. The whole country is flyover country in that case!

The term flyover country is stupid, but the people who use it probably wouldn't like living in places they call flyover country anyway.  Just like living in Manhattan wouldn't be for me.

Being called ''flyover country'' is a compliment. If left-wingers dislike a place, that place is clearly doing something right. For example, the constant bashing of Oklahoma by left-wingers on this forum only makes me like it more.

I agree with this.

Personally, as someone who's lived in the Midwest (generally considered "Flyover country") and Silicon Valley, I like both a lot, though they are very different.

I really admire the strong values, patriotism, and religiosity of places like Oklahoma (and to a lesser extent, the Midwest), but there is something to be said for the awesome scenery, mild winters, and  strong emphasis on education, especially in STEM fields, that we see in Silicon Valley.

With a couple exceptions, everything east of the Rockies is flyover country to me.

I personally like the term, though it does seem like a word that coast-dwellers use because they think the people of the Plains, Mountains, and anywhere they don't live are ignorant yokels.  I respect every state in the union.  I like the term, just because it sounds kind of modern and cool, but I can see why some people don't like it.  I don't use it, because, despite the fact that I like it, it's not particularly specific and not really applicable to most situations.

The fact that it sounds 'modern and cool' is part of what's awful about it.

To be fair, I don't actually use it.  I think I first saw it used in a map where "Flyover Country" was an independent state 200 years in the future.  I don't think it should be an insult.  There is no inherent shame in living in a rural area.

'Flyover country' is a disgustingly metrocentric and supercilious concept (not NYMillennial).

Pretty much everything not LA or NYC is "flyover country" to the snobby elitists that live there.

Of course not. It was home for several years to the single greatest artistic and cultural event in the world.

What would that be? The birth place of the automobile or the childhood home of Michael Jackson.

Some advice: When BRTD makes posts referring to 'art' or 'culture', just ignore them.
