For a while now, Atlasia has been fighting the War on Drugs.  And has it succeeded?  Nope.  It's been quite costly, yet our prisons are full of people who did nothing up light up a couple of times.  I ask you, "Is this a responsible use of money?"  I say no, it's not.  I propose that marijuana be totally decriminalized, as well as possession of hard drugs.  The dealers are who we should go after, not the casual users who hurt no one by shooting up.  A portion of the money we save by not going after every user and having to house, feed, and clothe them for years in prison can be put into drug awareness programs, while the rest can be put into the general fund and used for...other projects Wink .  It's time to cut our losses on the War on Drugs and move on.  If you make me your president, I will do my best to make this happen.

Harry, I fully support your position on the War on Drugs and I'm certain it'll move you up a preference or two from me.

I would say that we did manage to decriminalize marijuana in the Sixth Senate session (another vote in favor that I'm fairly proud of).  Wink

And I vetoed it, I think.

Your term was over sessions 4 and 5, so the 6th legislation didn't concern you. Wink

I have to say that I agree with Harry on this issue, though most people probably already knew that from my political affiliation.

Quite dissapointing.  Why the hell is this forum so liberal on drugs?

Look at this poll: 59% of the American public Oppose the legalization of Marijuana; only 34% Support it.  Is there a rampant drug problem among forum members here?

There isn't a rampant drug problem among the forum, Kramer. What you need to understand is that the demographic makeup of the forum is quite different than the real world. For one thing, people here are likelier to be intelligent and well informed. One of the things being informed gets us is that we don't believe all the doomsday stories about pot - it's not as bad as the anti-drug people make it out to be, in fact alcohol causes more damage that pot does.

Yes, we're all junkies who dress like Kurt Cobain in 1989.

Yes I was the writer of this bill and the Senator who proposed it. I have to say it was one piece of legislation that I faught hard to get passed. In the text itself it states that marijuana is fully deciminalized and gives amnesty to those who were in jail on marijuana charges alone. I suggest you look it up on the Wiki.

No you didn't Senator. It was passed during the Sixth Senate and was signed by President Alcon. It had only two votes against, the votes of Senators Supersoulty and Mike Naso.

Yeah...that point was addressed yesterday, Senator. Senator King corrected him already.

Yes, yes there is.  I myself am among a few forum members currently addicted to heroin, and I'm also quite partial to the occasional rock of crack.  Most of the Democrats are on cocaine, while most Republicans are on acid, while the Libertarians are frequent ecstasy users.  And I thought Dave made it a necessity that everybody has at least smoked a joint or used a bong before registering, but clearly I was wrong about that.

Because the War on Drugs is a waste of time and money.

Look at this poll: 59% of the American public Oppose the legalization of Marijuana; only 34% Support it.  Is there a rampant drug problem among forum members here?
51% of the American public voted to re-elect George W. Bush.  What's your point?

Look at the demographics. Mostly young, middle class single males here.

yeah he has "Quaker beliefs" and wants to convert to Quakerism

Ah! I see. Well he wouldn't be alone. If I remember correctly their is a large Quaker population in Iowa. The only Quaker that I have ever known, an old teacher of mine, was from Iowa.
