Second-place primary finishers have often went on to become the nominee the next cycle. And if Trump loses in a landslide, Cruz is in an excellent position to say "I told you so".

I doubt it - this was the year for him to be the nominee. I mean I think he may put up a strong run though.

Ha no. Cruz was popular by virtue of Santorum '12; there will be some new face in '20 like Nikki Haley or Paul Ryan barring a dark horse Rubio run as the nominee

Highly doubt it. There will be a new slew of lunatics for the GOP to pick in 2020.

Yes, just like Santorum is the nominee this year, and Huckabee was the nominee in 2012.

Romney got more votes than Huckabee in the 2008 primaries.

I think this honor will come to Marco Rubio in 2020 because after Trump loses badly to Hillary Clinton in 2016 there will be absolutely no doubt that the GOP will need more Hispanic vote to win the presidency and Rubio is the best positionned Republican to attract Hispanic votes. In my opinion, the GOP would not like to be defeated so badky again by nominating Cruz. Like you said, there are many Republican nominees (Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney) which failed in their first presidential campaign only to win the nomination next time. I believe that Rubio would write a book, then campaign heavily for Republican Congressional candidates in 2016 and 2018 and fundraise money for them, thus leading to a Republican supermajority in November 2018. He could also make some appearences on television to comment how bad Hillary Clinton policies are. So he can run a viable enough campaign in 2020.

He's a car-crash candidate. Too conservative to ever win the nomination.

"Second-place primary finishers have often went on to become the nominee the next cycle."?

Tell that to noted presidents Rick Santorum (similar to Cruz), Pat Buchanan, Jesse Jackson and Gary Hart

He certainly has a chance, but I would easily bet on the field over Cruz.

Trump will be nominated for a second term as President in 2020.

Cruz may not even still be Senator.
IS this a joke? He won by 15 points in a presidential election year for his first run for senate and you think he will LOSE?

No. He will run but America has less appetite for 'losers' and '2nd chances' these days. Too many fresh faces will emerge. Cotton, Sasse, Ernst, Haley, Martinez, Gardner, Lee, to name but a few.

That said, if the calendar mirrors this years cycle and states move from open to closed caucuses/primaries, that would boost his chances.

The whole "next in line" thing in GOP presidential politics seems to be over with Romney.

The hope is that the GOP will learn their lesson once Trump is destroyed, and move far to the center, but this is the GOP so who knows.

After Trump loses badly next november, I think that the GOP would not like to lose badly in 2020 by nominating a candidate like Ted Cruz who is as extremist as Trump is. The Republicans will prefer Marco Rubio more than Cruz because after Trump loses in november, there will be absolutely no doubt that the GOP needs to attract more Hispanic votes and more ethnic minorities and Rubio is the best positionned to do that. In addition, Rubio will still be young in 2020, which will be an asset for the GOP in a year where all millenials will be eligible to vote.

If Cruz wins the nomination in 2020, Clinton might be the luckiest person on the planet.

Wouls this prove God is a Democrat?
