I actually think the party decides just fine when it exists as a functioning institution. What we've learned is that the Republican party no longer meets that description, something I have suspected since it took Romney so long to take down the political has-beens that were Gingrich and Santorum.

I find this election one of the most historic in modern history, if not the entire 250 year history of this nation. Our expectations for a presidential nominee have been turned upside down. This is like Goldwater meets Wendell Wilkie meets Pat Buchanan, versus the first female nominee (after the first black President, no less). This year makes almost all recent election years look like tame affairs.

I mean think about it. All of political scientist's knowledge about the presidential nomination process was put together to try and predict the outcome of these primaries. Nate Silver, the media, the internet, most human beings all thought Donald Trump was a joke candidate. They thought Bernie Sanders would go nowhere. Now here we are. 538's endorsement point calculator looks so incredibly unbearably idiotic and stupid; Trump is the nominee and his line of points is no where to be found among the lines of previous nominees like McCain, Romney, Bush and Reagan.
