A fair trade, paleocon on foreign policy, who supports finance reform, universal healthcare, and is pro-choice. Most likely a Detroit or Chicago factory worker or a Minneapolis citizen in the top 5%,

A hippie who did way too much acid in the 70's and is now insane.

For a serious answer, either a hardcore union guy or a contrarian who votes for whoever is against the "establishment"

Yes, and probably not as rare as people think.

Probably not as common as you think.  Given that only one county in WV actually voted for McGovern, an 18 yr old in '72 would be 62 this year, lifespans in coal country are shorter, and there's been hefty depopulation in the coal counties especially the southern ones.

For example in 1972 McDowell county voted:

Nixon 8972
McGovern 6811

In 2012:

Romney 3959
Obama  2109

Of course, a surviving retired coal miner in Florida could fit the profile, but they'll keep getting scarcer each year that goes by.

Another idea-

Although he didn't carry the state, I'm sure there were "South Dakota Loyalists" in SD who voted for McGovern even they wouldn't of had he been from another state. Lots of people vote straight ticket in Presidential/Governor's elections, but always like whoever their personal representative is, be they D or R, which is why incumbents win so often.

Someone who was a liberal hippie during his or her younger years but who gradually became more conservative and vehemently anti-establishment as he or she got older.

I saw coal miner and that's a good idea.  I was thinking someone who is concerned about the job market in a global economy with more free trade.
