No. The worst part is definitely late summer of the year before the election when the media becomes convinced both sides hate their candidates and need some party elder to come in an single-handedly sweep the primaries...

...like Rick Perry and Chris Christie in 2011
...and Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren in 2015.

You forgot Mitch Daniels in 2012 and Al Gore in 2004, 2008, and 2016.
