Yes. Reagan came after the Peanut farmer defeated Ford in a closely contested primary that went the distance.

Look at the ages of the candidates, Hillary is over 70, so is Trump. Assuming Hillary doesn't die in office (a real possibility given her age), there will be a realignment when finally, someone who's not a boomer breaks through the boomer barrier.

This was a retrenchment, boomers deciding that they didn't want to hand down the reins.

Trump is nothing new. Same tired old scene we went through with Romney.

By the time Hillary takes her oath of office, she will be about Reagan's age when he took his in January 1981.  If Reagan didn't die in office, why would Hillary?  Also, women typically outlive men, so there's that...

Who's the last moderate republican who's won?

George Bush Sr. He certainly ran as a moderate.

But he wrapped himself in the American flag, and he ran the Willie Horton ad!!!  Tongue

Jeb! the Bush family scion: political career ended by Trump
Rubio the GOP's Great Hispanic Hope: political career ended by Trump
Cruz the darling of the conservative base: presidential ambitions humiliated by Trump

(Walker and Rand also embarrassed themselves, but that wasn't anything to do with Trump)

Really quite impressive.

True, but it's nothing compared to the damage nominee Trump is going to do to the GOP for the forseeable future.

I still maintain that Rubio would have won the millenial vote and so could these newer Repubs like Haley and Ryan, but sadly, the baby boomers feel the need to be 1900's populists and refuse to see the writing on the wall. If the GOP can't nominate someone under 55 by 2020, they've probably lost any hope they have at retaining the electorate.
