Would a minor cabinet position even be a promotion for a Senator in a safe seat with good seniority? I'm sure he'd take the position if offered, if only for the lifestyle, but I've always thought that Sessions is simply enjoying his new national profile after months of exaltation by Cruz and Trump.

Grossly under-qualified for SoS. Considering in 1986 he was one of only two federal district court nominees the Senate refused to confirm in half a century due to serious concerns about....well, a lot of stuff, his confirmation would be grueling at best, and likely filibustered.

The way this title is worded makes it sound very sinister.

I imagine he'll at least be a semi-finalist for VP and a candidate for a few of the big 4 Cabinet positions. As a former state AG, he definitely makes the most sense as AG. He's the #3 Republican on Armed Services Committee so I could see him at Defense. And he seems to be an important foreign policy adviser for Trump, so he could be a pick for State.

If Trump's potential cabinet pool is as small as people are saying, then yes, I can easily see him being picked for something.

SOS if he wants it.   He's just not appealing enough to be VP I'd rather have Christie if it came to it.

I can't see Trump picking Sessions as VP but I could see him have a very large role in any potential (and I stress potential) Trump administration. The most logical place is for him to be National security adviser and provide some experience to Trump's bombast.
