I will update this thread about weekly if I can and keep track of the amount of followers/likes/etc. the candidates get on social media. As of May 7th...

Twitter (followers)

Trump - 8 million
Clinton - 6.2 million
Sanders - 2.1 million
Johnson - 0.15 million (150 K)
Stein - 0.085 million (85 K)

Facebook (likes)

Trump - 7.6 million
Sanders - 3.9 million
Clinton - 3.4 million
Johnson - 0.42 million (420 K)
Stein - 0.174 million (174 K)

Instagram (followers)

Trump - 1.5 million
Sanders - 1.3 million
Clinton - 1.1 million

Johnson and Stein both have an embarrassingly low amount Instagram followers, so I'm not going to post them.

Is it bad that I have more Instagram followers than Jill Stein does.

Twitter (followers)

Trump - 8 million
Clinton - 6.2 million
Sanders - 1.9 million
Johnson - 0.15 million (150 K)
Stein - 0.085 million (85 K)

I would note that the 1.9 million figure you give Sanders is only his senatorial account and not his presidential one, which is currently at 2.1 million.

Wow. Better than I would have thought. And Trump's rallies continue to blow the doors off. Baseless hysteria aside, he might be the most accessible, most understandable candidate the GOP has put up.

Gotcha, I thought his senatorial one was just the one he used for the presidential race since he had common campaign talking points one there. Anyway, its fixed.

Actually, I'd say that both Trump and Sanders are extremely accessible, extremely understandable, and extremely relatable. They represent what the electorate is looking for this cycle; yes, they sometimes show themselves to be not too polished, and often speak in ways that the PC police would say is problematic.

What's up with the democrats on Twitter?  Why is Hillary outplaying Bernie there when he's beating her as expected across the rest of social media.

Don't really know, but a hypothesis is that Facebook has the ability to be more personal with long posts, and Twitter has the ability to be more formal and convenient for public officials. Hillary Clinton has been around in politics for a long time, and a secretary of state for 4 years. She's probably built up a strong following throughout the years that Sanders has only had a year to do. It also depends on how often they use each of them (which I have no idea about), so if Clinton uses Twitter a lot more than Facebook, that could be part of it.

Hillary made her Twitter in early 2013, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Hillary made her Twitter in early 2013, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Also Tweets from Hillary was a thing back when people briefly thought she was actually cool.

Donald Trump's followers are as real as the esteemed University that bears his name.

A lot of people follow Trump just to see what absurd thing he says next. I would be part of that faction because I like to see the train wreck, but I refuse to be part of something he brags about, meaning the number of Twitter followers.

July 16th

Twitter (followers)

Trump - 9.8 M (+200 K)
Clinton - 7.4 M (+100 K)
Johnson - 215 K (+8 K)
Stein - 154 K (+24 K)

Facebook (likes)

Trump - 9.2 M (+100 K)
Clinton - 4.4 M (+-0 K)
Johnson - 681 K (+60 K)
Stein - 370 K (+78 K)

Instagram (followers)

Trump - 2 M (+-0 K)
Clinton - 1.5 M (+-0 K)
Johnson - 35 K (+2 K)
Stein - 9 K (+3 K)

The week that Sanders formally acknowledged Clinton would be the nominee is the week Clinton finally overtook him in Facebook likes. Also, its very much worth noting that Stein's social media has been blowing up since Sanders left the race, more than any other candidate and is quickly catching up to Johnson.

Well of course.

A lot of people follow Trump just to see what absurd thing he says next. I would be part of that faction because I like to see the train wreck, but I refuse to be part of something he brags about, meaning the number of Twitter followers.

Absolutely but he has also has over 9 million Facebook likes. That's not exactly the same thing, most people don't like something if they just want to watch a train wreck. But non of this is implying popularity on social media = political popularity.
