I'll add the Kingdom of Italy to the list then to work on the backstory. Feel free to add any details, proposals or suggestions so we can flesh out your nation more (events, dates, specifics on ideology, what Pope you'd like, and so on).

How free am I in deciding the back story?

Actually, it's more like proposals as I make the final decision, but I've incorporated most of what players have proposed with very minor changes.

Currently working on Japan, UK, Germany, Italy, Ottoman Empire, France, Romania, and the Russian mega-post (that includes Crimea). I also need the Chinese info when NeverAgain is ready.

It's left unclear in purpose. Communism as we know it (in the Leninist/Stalinist brand) never developed to the point in did in our world, and so it's up for Spamage to come up with his particular brand and set of beliefs.

After Maudania asked about Cuba, I made a little retcon on the US backstory. The island had been given self-government under McKinley in the game despite being a US puppet, and it declared full independence when the coup was launched. The Cuban government shelters Hearst, McAdoo and others, but it is an independent and sovereign nation now.

Also, I'm working on backstories but it takes time, so I'd like for us to start on Saturday.

There's something I can't tell from the map: was the Panama/Nicaragua Canal ever built? I think I can see Suez in there, but I see nothing of the sort in Latin America.

Nope, far as I remember the US never sponsored Panamanian separatism (and so that particular coup failed), so Colombia still has Panama. There was an attempt to build a Nicaragua Canal in the 1910's, and the utter collapse (due to financial fraud) of that instance indirectly caused the World Crash of 1918-1919 (more on that later). So, for the time being, there actually isn't a way to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic that isn't the Strait of Magellan.

Personally, I'm quite shocked (and encouraged) at the level of enthusiasm, that seems like a good sign! Working on the UK now, I got delayed researching for the insanity I'm setting up in the Balkans and Russia.

Also, I still need NeverAgain's details! Without them I can't fully finish Russia and Japan.
