reminds me of when Stan in South Park asks the hippies their plans to change the world and they tell him what already exists

Watermelon politics among Green Parties around the world aren't really uncommon. I'm surprised it took them this long to go a more socialist route.

If that happens, say goodbye to them being a major third party. They've changed a lot since Nader.

I wonder if the Greens will supplant the Libertarians as the nation's largest third party as more Millennials reach voting age (and older generations start dying off more).

Most Libertarians are Millennials though. Libertarianism is pretty popular amongst Millenials. You have to remember that a lot of young Republicans tend to be libertarians or libertarian-leaning according to polls. If anything, the Libertarian Party will remarkably increase its number of voters as more Millennials reach the voting age, especially if the GOP permanently becomes the party of Trump and his xenophobic ideology. Trump is hated by young people (even young Republicans) according to most polls.

Can we stop using this "watermelon" phrase?

Who exactly would vote for the Green Party now that wouldn't if they were explicitly anti-capitalist?

Doubt the Libertarian Party actually replaces the GOP as the major fiscally conservative party. If anything, as millennials flood the voting booths, the Republicans will shift to the center (socially) and have a less-interventionist foreign policy.

This is why environmentalists in America can't really get anything truly meaningful done. There's too much unwillingness to compromise or take a moderate approach to issues.

You only say that because that's what the oPress has been telling you. Embrace the Green deal.

This is the natural progression. The Democratic Party is moving to the left. Sanders (and Clinton, to a lesser extent) are advocating for almost all of what the Green Party was campaigning for a few years ago.

What's the point in the Greens existing unless they're farther to the left than the Democrats?

It isn't decentralization of power since you will still have to use force to make people abide by it. The end result would just be all of the power that is currently held by the mega corporations would not be held by the people who run the government. Little would change for most folks.

Unless of course they are advocating for voluntary communities that use socialism as a model. If that were the case I have no objection to it. But such isn't necessarily anti-capitalism and can work perfectly fine within a capitalist society.

Who cares about these losers? Next thing you know, they're going to be advocating for a "feminist foreign policy". Disgusting.

What's the point in the Greens existing unless they're farther to the left than the Democrats?
Uh... some would argue that the point of a political party is to represent a set of political views, not to change them to chase votes. They should be happy that the Democrats have moved left and start voting for them.

I feel like it'd just make them the same as the 20 other third parties with 'socialist' in the name.

I honestly thought the Greens were already explicitly socialist.

The Green Party does not represent environmentalists as a whole.

Anyway, no one really cares what the Green Party believes because they're just a protest vote.

They kinda needed to die after 2000, if there will be another strong third party candidate from the left it will be with a more socialist brand (though just as a what if Sanders 2020 for the greens would be fun)
