Portuguese voters are split virtually down the middle over whether to approve the proposed European Union constitution, according to an opinion poll published today.

The poll, published by the weekly newspaper Expresso, indicated 50.8% would vote yes, while 49.2% would reject the charter.

The government intends to hold a referendum on the treaty in October.

The Portuguese have favoured deeper EU integration since Portugal joined the bloc in 1986. Portugal has received billions of euros in development aid from Brussels since joining the bloc in 1986. But uncertainty over the amount of future EU development aid and the charter’s recent rejection by French and Dutch voters have fuelled doubts about the bloc’s direction.

The governing Socialist Party and the main opposition Social Democratic Party have both said they will campaign for a ‘yes’ vote.

And in Luxembourg, it's 55% for yes and 45% for no. Can you believe that? I can...

The Constitution is DEAD. The sooner the Powers That Be realize this, the better.

Whether Chirac and Schroder will admit this is another thing...

Sorry can't help you there on specifics, except to say that there has always existed a strong correlation between understanding and Yes votes here re: European treaties, prime example being our two Nice Treaty referenda.

In my experience the correlatino is rather between how well people THINK they understand the EU than their actual level of understanding. For instance the Greek CLAIMED that they would be reading the EU constitution in droves and thus the Greek were considered to be much more interested in it than other peoples in EUrope, when in fact they were just being less realistic.

Yes. YOu are saying that those who actually rad the treaty, the cult elites, vote for it, while the proles vote against it because they are ignorant, and possible need to be "reeducated" in order to vote "yes" like every good citizen should.

Actually, Bono, I think he is saying that those who read it were more likely to vote yes. That does not necessarily make it any more correct, and that part about "re-education" is rather an extreme stretch of what he said.

Thanks for correcting my spelling. I always had this patological fear of hiphens I try to fight, but sometimes my head is not strong enough to cut that out.
Second, I think the word "possibly" is indicative that it was an extreme stretch, done for shock value more than anything else, I willingly admit so.
