Strategically, Reagan so he gets crushed and no "Reagan Revolution".

Legitimately Ford (Sane).

Uh, Ford almost won even with the Nixon pardon thing. Reagan would have won the general.

Reagan's appeal in 1980 was that he offered a change of direction from the seeming decline of America. In 1976 Carter had that appeal and Reagan was seen as a right-wing demagogue. Reagan would have had about as much chance in '76 as Jack Kennedy would have had in '56.

Enthusiastically for Gerald Ford (primary and general). The last great president of the GOP.

He was seen as right-wing demagogue in '80 too, but too many fools took drank the Gene McCarthy juice and said "well, smooth-talking demagogue is still better than stubborn and squishy moderate".

And Reagan in '76 could have used "outsider" appeal AND tried to play the experience card (since he was a two-term governor...but Carter was a State Senator). He could've easily still been the change of direction anyway and outdone Carter in the debates.

Hate to say it, but the People's Park Butcher was inevitable regardless of Ford losing the primary, Ford being re-elected, or how things turned out.

I was treating this like an IRL thing, not an ATL.

Even with Church, Reagan could peg him as an insider and possibly win on that even in '76.

Ford at the time, but I would not have been that turned off by Reagan either.  However, 1980s Reagan > 1976 Reagan.
