Democrats easily in the earlier years, they got worse as they went on though. Democrats, because at least they weren't anti-democratic, elitist, and representative of only the business class.

At the presidential level, the only instance I can think of the Democrats being the lesser evil would be Harrison vs. MVB.

Lean Whigs, for the exact reasons Bigby doesn't want 'em. Them, the early Federalists, and pre-1877 GOP were the prime example of what a politics should be: socially ready to allow in some kind of moral consensus, but not afraid of silly things like "balanced budgets", or profits to actually help people out.

Southern Whigs were with few exceptions to Northern Whigs, were what Dixiecrats were to Northern and New South Democrats in the 60's far as I can tell.

A shame at the Presidential level they kept electing their absolute worst picks such as Harrison or Henry Clay and by the time they stopped doing that, they were on their way out.
