Obviously neither is an actual republican, but who comes closest to being one?

The one who has gotten more votes in a Republican primary than any GOP candidate in history

If we're basing it off of the 3-stool "Reagan Republican" definition, then neither

Right now, the one that's a registered Republican. Overall, Lincoln Chafee.

Look, Trump may not have views that fit in with what the party has historically supported, but since he is effectively the partys nominee at this point, I think we can say Trump.  Johnson used to be, but since he is now a Libertarian, then not him.

If you are registered as a Republican or vote in GOP primaries in states with no partisan registration (i.e., play your part in shaping party policy and constituting the GOP electorate), then you're a real Republican.  Period.  Donald Trump is a Republican, and Gary Johnson is not, just as our buddy King is a Republican and the "DINOs" everyone hates from WV are not.  It is normal (and a sign that you are a thinking human being) to disagree with your party platform on multiple issues.

With that said, I'd much rather the future GOP look like Gary Johnson than Donald Trump.

One has held elected political office as a Republican, one has won the national Republican electorate. I'll say TRUMP, only if he wins.

In terms of publicly stated views, Trump by far. His ideology is a good representation of the Republican consensus from 1856 until the party was taken over by the crazies.  Trump is a Lincolnite on trade, a Taftite (Bob) on foreign policy, and an Eisenhowerite on immigration.

If you vote for one party 90%+ of the time in general elections, you are a de facto member of that party. I don't care whether you're a faux "independent" or a relic from the other party. The voting record is what tells the story.

I'm afraid that until November, or however long Trump and his allies are winning Republican races, Trump is the face of the GOP.

Donald Trump, because he is an actual registered Republican, while Gary Johnson is no longer a member of the Republican Party.

How can one both be a real republican and support the free market?
