I think this election comes down to Pennsylvania. The only place in the country I see Trump having strength is the industrial midwest and the northeast. Clinton can lose Ohio and still win. Michigan is too democratic to matter. The election is already lost if Clinton is losing Michigan. Virginia and Colorado, the other potential tipping point states, seem to be anti-Trump. Florida may be a future tipping point state but I don't think it will be in 2016. Trump will need to win Pennsylvania if he wants the presidency but the DNC should fire up Democrats in the Philadelphia area. I don't think it's a complete game changer, but it's worth a point or two. If the election is close, that could be the difference.

In 2012, the parties won each other's convention states.

I'm not convinced holding the convention in a state helps win that state. It's not even backed up historical precedent.

I used to be on the "why on Earth would Trump win Pennsylvania bandwagon," but after further consideration, I actually agree with you. I, too, think PA will be the tipping-point state. I even think PA could have a R+2 PVI this election. Of course, if Clinton is winning nationally be 5 points or so, there will be closer states. But Clinton and Trump both need PA for a reasonable electoral path to victory (though Clinton has a potential backup in FL).

This election in particular, the conventions might have the opposite effect on the metro areas they are held in than conventional wisdom would predict. Word on the street is that there will be a lot of ruckus happening outside of each convention.

CO, IA and VA aren't good states for Trump. He either has to win two of those or win PA.

Like I said, it might be worth a point or two. I think something like that happened in Colorado in 2008. Or maybe it was because the state hadn't been truly contested in a long time. It is hard to measure whether there is such an effect, but in a close election, even small movements could be crucial. And in a place like Philadelphia, where increasing turnout is the key, having the DNC in town could help.

Yes, I'm glad they chose our nation's first capital vs. the nation's first crapshoot (sorry Cleveland).

Yes, I never understood why people think snarling up traffic in a large city for a week in the middle of the summer and holding an event that draws in crazies from all over the country who come to protest is supposed to make people MORE likely to vote for you.

There is almost no correlation historically between the "trend" in a state and a party holding its convention there. In fact for the Republicans, it is a slightly negative correlation. I could make a joke about how seeing Republicans up close and personal tends to repel voters, but I'll pass.

When the Dem convention erupts in chaos and potentially rioting, I doubt proximity will be a positive.

Of course, the same goes for the GOP and Cleveland.

Should've been in ATL so I could just commute each day instead of relying upon overpriced accommodations.

The advantage is tiny.
The PA vote would need to be so close (towards Hillary), that most people will just overlook this as nothing.

The last one was in the south (Charlotte), and finding union friendly businesses/contractors was apparently a pain.

It's a shame it won't be in Boston for a while, and the Republicans probably won't go to Boston either.
