I was curious so I went on the thread on r/s4p where they announced Peterson was voting for Sanders. Generally people were expressing surprise that such a conservative Democrat would support him. I did find this little exchange, though:

The best part is the fact that Political Compass was cited.

http://www.civilbeat.org/2016/06/djou-jumps-into-mayors-race-aiona-opts-not-to-run-at-all/

In addition to Djou opting out of a congressional run to instead run for Mayor, Duke Aiona, the former Lt. Gov of Hawaii, has also declined to run for Congress this year. Aiona had pulled out papers to run for state senate, Congress, and Mayor, but has decided to not run for any office this year. It appears as if Colleen Hanabusa will cruise to victory easily to reclaim her seat, with no major democratic or republican opposition.

Now the question is whether or not Ige will call a special election. If so, looks like Hanabusa is headed back to the House of Representatives sooner than expected.

When Patsy Mink died in office much later than Takai did (in late September) in 2002, a special election was called. I'm certain that one will be called for this, most likely alongside the regular election.

RIP. I didn't expect much from him when he was elected, and he surprised me by being a stalwart progressive during his short time in office.

Special election will likely be held alongside the fall general election for the full term, as per the sketchy elections officer.
